Adjunct Instructor in Design
Job Description
Winthrop University, a highly ranked, public, comprehensive university, announces a search for adjunct instructors of design, teaching for the Department of Design within the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Our campus is in Rock Hill, South Carolina, just thirty minutes from Charlotte North Carolina's thriving design and art market and international airport. This position requires the instructor to teach undergraduate courses, such as Design Fundamentals (DESF), Interior Design (INDS), or Visual Communication (VCOM). Candidates should demonstrate commitment to an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to design studies, at the foundation, intermediate, and advanced levels. The ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in design practices including but not limited to game design, graphic design, illustration, and and/or interior design, as well as design research, design thinking, interactive and web design, and interactive digital products. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to high-quality undergraduate teaching, student engagement, and creating a positive learning environment.
Position Responsibilities
  • Teach assigned class or classes in the undergraduate design degree, such as studio courses (6 contact hours per week) or lecture (3 contact hours per week), or seminars (from 1-hour to 2.5-hours per week)
  • Prepare course content using a variety of methods
  • Deliver assigned course materials, projects, and examinations consistent with departmental learning outcomes
  • Promote student learning and participation
  • Provide reasonable support to students outside of class meeting times, maintaining office hours on campus, or via video, or other approved means
  • Maintain course records, submit grades by university deadlines, and comply with university academic policies

Required Qualifications
  • Candidates should hold a terminal degree (MFA, MDes,) in Design or a related discipline.
  • Candidates holding a bachelor's degree in design-such as a BA or BFA or BDes, or degree other than an MFA or MDes in design-who have significant teaching and/or professional experience equivalent to a terminal degree, may be considered.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work with diverse student populations, and a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and student engagement

Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum 2-3 years of university-level teaching experience, which could include graduate-level and adjunct teaching.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in industry.
  • Drawing, drafting, and print production are necessary for our foundations and some upper-level courses.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud, knowledge of printing pre-press principles and printing methodology, and knowledge of user experience design and product design, with an ability to use and demonstrate use of Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Interior design instructors should know AutoCad, Revit, SketchUp, codes and standards, and contract documents, as well as rendering techniques with markers.

Position is non-tenure, adjunct position.
