What is an architectural trainee?

Architectural trainees are individuals who are gaining practical experience in the field of architecture, usually as part of their education or licensure process. They work under the supervision of licensed architects to assist with design, drafting, project documentation, and other architectural tasks. This position allows them to apply theoretical knowledge from their studies to real-world projects, develop technical skills, and learn about industry standards. The role is often a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed architect.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architectural trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architectural Trainee, you need a solid understanding of architectural design principles, drafting, and building codes, typically supported by a degree in architecture or related studies. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as familiarity with model-making tools, is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and eagerness to learn from feedback help set exceptional trainees apart. These skills and qualities are essential for producing accurate project deliverables, collaborating within teams, and progressing toward professional licensure.

What are some common challenges architectural trainees face when transitioning from academic studies to a professional firm?

Architectural Trainees often find the shift from academic projects to real-world practice challenging, especially when adapting to firm standards, project timelines, and client expectations. Unlike academic work, professional environments require collaboration with diverse teams, effective communication, and adherence to strict deadlines and budgets. Trainees may also need to quickly learn industry-standard software and documentation processes. Embracing feedback and being proactive in seeking mentorship can help ease this transition and support professional growth.

What is the difference between Architectural Trainee vs Junior Architect?

AspectArchitectural TraineeJunior Architect
QualificationsTypically pursuing or recently completed architecture degreeCompleted architecture degree, possibly with internship experience
Work EnvironmentInternship or training programs, supervised tasksFull-time work in architectural firms, responsible for project tasks
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in design, drafting, and researchPreparing drawings, assisting senior architects, project execution

Architectural Trainee and Junior Architect roles often overlap in education and entry-level responsibilities. The main difference is that an Architectural Trainee is usually still in training or recent graduate, while a Junior Architect has completed their degree and has begun working independently under supervision.

How to get a job in architecture without any experience?

To secure an architectural trainee position without experience, focus on building a strong portfolio through academic projects or personal designs, and gain relevant skills in CAD software like AutoCAD or Revit. Internships, volunteering, or assisting experienced architects can also provide practical exposure and improve your chances of employment.

What is the lowest position in architecture?

The lowest position in architecture is typically an intern or architectural trainee, often an entry-level role for students or recent graduates gaining practical experience. These positions usually involve assisting senior staff, learning industry software like AutoCAD or Revit, and understanding project workflows under supervision.

Job description

Senior Curriculum Developer, sUAS Operations - Remote EligibleBuild scalable, performance-based curriculum for Skydio sUAS operations across regions

Location: United States

Compensation: $110,000 - 145,000 USD / year

About The RoleSenior Curriculum Developer

Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight, the key technology for the future of drones and aerial mobility. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in‑class hardware and software product development, operational excellence, and customer obsession to empower a broader, more diverse audience of drone users, from utility inspectors to first responders, soldiers in battlefield scenarios, and beyond.

The Skydio Training team is transforming how pilots, technicians, and operators learn. As our programs continue to evolve beyond traditional classroom instruction into immersive, simulation‑driven learning experiences, we are building the next generation of technical education for autonomous flight.

The Curriculum team partners closely with instructors, learning experience developers, product teams, software engineers, simulation developers, and subject matter experts to create learning programs that help customers and internal teams operate Skydio systems safely, confidently, and effectively.

This position may be based out of our San Mateo headquarters or remotely within the US.

Skydio Training is transforming how pilots and technicians learn. As our programs continue to evolve beyond traditional classroom instruction into immersive, simulation‑driven learning experiences, we’re seeking a Senior Curriculum Developer to architect the future of sUAS training for critical industry.

This role owns the instructional backbone of our programs: what trainees need to be able to do, how they learn it, and how we prove they’ve learned it. You’ll perform task analysis on complex technical systems, define performance‑based learning objectives, design assessments and certification paths, and sequence content across classroom, self‑paced, simulation, and immersive delivery modalities.

Working closely with instructors, learning experience developers, software engineers, simulation developers, and subject matter experts, you’ll help shape the future of Skydio’s pilot and technician training ecosystem.

Own curriculum architecture end to end: conduct job and task analyses, define performance‑based learning objectives, and build course maps that scale across audiences and product lines.

Translate sophisticated technical systems into structured learning paths spanning classroom instruction, self‑paced learning, simulation, and immersive training environments.

Design assessments, practical evaluations, and certification and qualification standards that measure real operational capability rather than recall.

Partner with Learning Experience Developers to scope and storyboard instructional media, ensuring every asset maps to a defined objective.

Enable instructors through facilitator guides, lesson plans, train‑the‑trainer materials, and delivery standards that keep quality consistent across regions and teams.

Expand the instructional use of Skydio Paraverse across pilot and technician curricula, and design scenario‑based learning that takes advantage of simulation, AR/VR, and interactive visualization.

Apply AI‑assisted workflows to accelerate curriculum development, content maintenance, and localisation without compromising instructional rigor.

Establish scalable curriculum standards, templates, and revision workflows, and maintain content currency as products evolve.

Define and track learning effectiveness measures, then use the data to iterate on curriculum.

Help define the roadmap for future learning technologies and curriculum strategy at Skydio.

BA/BS in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Instruction, Adult Education, or equivalent experience.

7+ years designing and developing curriculum for educational, instructional, or technical training programs.

Demonstrated expertise in instructional systems design, including task analysis, objective writing, assessment design, and evaluation.

Experience building curriculum for complex technical products or specialised subject matter.

Working knowledge of adult learning principles and performance‑based training.

Strong portfolio of curriculum artefacts, such as course maps, lesson plans, facilitator guides, and assessment instruments.

Experience collaborating with engineers, media producers, instructors, and technical subject matter experts.

Excellent communication, project management, and stakeholder management skills.

Experience supporting aviation, aerospace, robotics, defence, industrial equipment, autonomous systems, or similarly technical products.

Experience designing curriculum for regulated or certification‑driven environments, such as FAA Part 107, Part 91, or military qualification and training standards.

Experience designing scenario‑based or simulator‑based learning, including scenario scripting and evaluation criteria.

Familiarity with immersive learning technologies including XR, simulation, or digital twins, and with the instructional design considerations they introduce.

Experience with LMS administration and standards such as SCORM, xAPI, or cmi5, including curriculum tracking and reporting.

Experience leveraging AI‑assisted instructional design or content development workflows.

Familiarity with geospatial visualisation or spatial data workflows.

Experience with train‑the‑trainer programmes and scaling delivery across distributed instructor teams.
