What is an architectural rendering?

An Architectural Rendering job involves creating visual representations of architectural designs using 3D modeling, rendering software, and illustration techniques. Professionals in this field produce photorealistic images, animations, and virtual walkthroughs to help clients, architects, and developers visualize projects before construction. They work with architects, interior designers, and real estate firms to enhance presentations and marketing materials. Strong skills in software like 3ds Max, V-Ray, and Photoshop are essential.

What does an architectural rendering professional do?

As an Architectural Rendering professional, your typical day often involves collaborating with architects and designers to interpret project requirements, creating and refining 3D models, adjusting lighting and textures, and producing high-quality visualizations or animations. You may also participate in meetings to discuss design intent, incorporate client feedback, and ensure that renderings accurately reflect project specifications. Additionally, staying current with digital rendering techniques and software updates is an important aspect of your ongoing development. This role frequently requires balancing multiple deadlines and adapting to changes based on team or client input. Working in this position provides a dynamic mix of creative problem-solving and technical execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in architectural rendering, and why are they important?

To excel in Architectural Rendering, you need a strong proficiency in 3D modeling, visualization, and an understanding of architectural concepts, usually backed by a degree in architecture, design, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Autodesk 3ds Max, SketchUp, V-Ray, Lumion, and Adobe Creative Suite is highly valued, and knowledge of BIM software can be a plus. Attention to detail, creativity, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate with architects and designers are key soft skills. These competencies are crucial for producing compelling, accurate visualizations that effectively convey design intent to clients and stakeholders.

Job description

SBLM is seeking a talented and experienced Architectural Designer with strong fundamental design skills and the ability to develop thoughtful, innovative architectural solutions from initial programming through design development and construction documentation.

Our practice is organized across five studios and includes a diverse range of project types, including educational facilities, mixed-use and multifamily residential buildings, healthcare environments, and retail and shopping center renovations. This position will initially focus primarily on educational projects, making prior experience with educational facilities, institutional clients, and established client design standards particularly valuable.

We are looking for a designer who can understand a client's program, identify the underlying planning and design challenges, and translate those requirements into clear, functional, creative, and buildable architectural solutions.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop architectural design solutions based on client programs, project requirements, site conditions, budgets, and applicable design standards.
  • Lead and contribute to space planning, programming, test fits, building organization, and the development of architectural concepts.
  • Interpret and apply client-specific design criteria and standards while identifying opportunities for thoughtful and innovative design.
  • Develop projects from early planning and conceptual design through design development and construction documentation.
  • Evaluate design alternatives and resolve planning, technical, constructability, and coordination issues as projects evolve.
  • Work collaboratively with project architects, consultants, interior designers, and other members of the architectural team.
  • Communicate design concepts clearly through drawings, models, diagrams, presentations, and discussions with clients and project teams.
  • Develop coordinated architectural models and drawing sets in Revit, including documents for client review, agency submissions, permitting, and construction.
  • Integrate architectural design intent with structural, MEP, civil, and other consultant requirements.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and internal project critiques.
  • Contribute design expertise across SBLM's five studios as project needs and opportunities arise.

Qualifications

  • Professional Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture. Licensure is a plus.
  • Approximately 5–10 years of professional experience in an architectural practice.
  • Demonstrated strength in architectural planning, design development, and problem-solving.
  • Experience translating client programs and requirements into well-resolved architectural solutions.
  • Educational project experience is strongly preferred, particularly experience working within established institutional or client design standards.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, materials, construction methods, and design constructability.
  • Ability to balance design quality with functional, technical, budgetary, and schedule requirements.
  • Strong understanding of the development and coordination of construction documents.
  • High proficiency in Revit is required, with the ability to use the model as an integrated design, coordination, and documentation tool.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with visualization and rendering tools is beneficial but secondary to strong architectural design and planning capabilities.
  • Strong verbal, written, and graphic communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of assigned design responsibilities.

What We Value

At SBLM, we value designers who bring architectural judgment and curiosity to their work—not simply the ability to produce drawings or presentations. Successful candidates will be able to understand the goals behind a client's program, ask the right questions, explore alternatives, and develop solutions that improve both the project and the experience of the people who will use it.

We are looking for someone who combines creativity with practical architectural knowledge: a designer who understands that innovation must also be functional, coordinated, constructible, and responsive to the client's needs.

The ideal candidate takes pride in developing each assignment beyond the obvious solution and sees every project as an opportunity to create better architecture.

Compensation & Benefits:
We offer a comprehensive benefits package and a supportive workplace culture, including:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Employer-Paid Life Insurance
  • Additional voluntary benefits
  • Comprehensive paid time off package, including vacation days, sick leave

and paid holidays.

  • Access to professional development opportunities
