What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during an Architect Internship?

As an Architect Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks that support the design and planning processes. These may include creating or revising CAD drawings, assisting with model making, conducting site visits, and participating in design meetings with senior architects and clients. Interns often contribute to research on materials, building codes, and sustainability considerations. You'll also have opportunities to observe the workflow of a professional studio and collaborate with different teams, gaining exposure to real-world architectural challenges and project timelines.

What are good internships for architecture majors?

Good internships for architecture majors include positions at architecture firms, design studios, or construction companies that offer hands-on experience with drafting, modeling, and project management. These internships help develop skills in software like AutoCAD or Revit and often provide exposure to real-world architectural processes and client interactions.

What are the big 4 internships?

The 'Big 4' internships typically refer to internship programs offered by the four largest accounting firms: Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms offer internships in areas such as accounting, consulting, and audit, providing valuable experience and potential pathways to full-time employment in the professional services industry.

What is the difference between Architects Internship vs Architectural Assistant?

AspectArchitects InternshipArchitectural Assistant
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of architecture programTypically holds or is pursuing architecture degree
Work EnvironmentInternship sites, architecture firms, design studiosOffice-based, project support roles
Employer & Industry UsageInternship programs for training and experienceEntry-level support role in architecture firms

Architects Internship and Architectural Assistant roles both target individuals pursuing architecture careers. Internships focus on gaining practical experience during or after studies, while Architectural Assistants support project work in professional settings. Both roles require related education and serve as stepping stones toward licensure and professional practice.

What is an architect internship?

An architect internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates pursuing a career in architecture. Interns work under the supervision of licensed architects, gaining hands-on experience with design, drafting, project management, and construction documents. This role helps aspiring architects develop practical skills, build professional networks, and fulfill requirements for architectural licensure. Internships often serve as a bridge between academic study and full-time employment in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Architect Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect Intern, you generally need foundational knowledge in architecture, design principles, and drafting, typically supported by progress toward a professional architecture degree. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as basic understanding of building codes, is essential. Strong organizational skills, creativity, teamwork, and effective communication help interns stand out. These skills and qualities are crucial for learning quickly, supporting project teams, and contributing meaningfully to architectural projects.

How to get an internship in architecture?

To secure an architecture internship, candidates should build a strong portfolio showcasing design skills, gain relevant experience through coursework or personal projects, and apply to firms or organizations that offer internship programs. Proficiency in design software like AutoCAD, Revit, or SketchUp and understanding of building codes can improve chances. Many internships require current enrollment in an architecture or related program and may involve a competitive application process.

What do you do as an architect intern?

An architect intern assists with designing building plans, creating drawings, and preparing project documentation under the supervision of licensed architects. They often use software like AutoCAD or Revit and gain practical experience in construction processes and building codes. Internships typically involve observing project meetings and supporting various phases of architectural projects.

Job description

PsiQuantum'sย mission is to build the first useful quantum computers-machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.ย

Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.ย

Our architecture and approachย isย based on silicon photonics. Byย leveragingย the advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry-including partners like GlobalFoundries-we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photonsย don'tย feel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.ย

In 2024,ย PsiQuantumย announced government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition that quantum computing will be strategically and economically defining-and that now is the time to scale.ย

PsiQuantumย also develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies-including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical-to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.ย

Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. Itย representsย a fundamental shift-and a path to mastering challenges that cannot beย solvedย any other way. The potential is enormous, and we have a clearย pathย to make it real.ย

Come join us.ย

Job Summary:

*We are currently only reviewing applications of candidate's that have their Ph.D. or are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program.ย

Quantum architecture internships offer a chance to work in cutting edge research to move quantum computing from a theoretical concept to a real-world technology. As an intern you will work with our quantum architecture team to contribute to the development of a full-stack quantum computing architecture. Topics can include theory and modelling of linear optical networks, fusion-based quantum computing, fault tolerance, decoding methods, logical architecture, simulation and modeling methods.

Internships take place through ought the year with durations from 3 to 6 months. We offer placement opportunities in Palo Alto, California (United States), Brisbane (Australia) as well remote positions. Location options will be dependent on the internship project topic.

The internship role requires a challenging mix of creativity, analytical skills, and knowledge in one of theย above areas. Enthusiasm for quantum computing is essential!

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and study methods for fault-tolerant FBQC.
  • Project topics could include: linear optical networks, FBQC protocols, quantum error correcting codes, decoding methods, simulation and modelling methods
  • Model the origin and propagation of errors.
  • Simulate and benchmark different protocols.
  • Document and communicate results.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Degree in Physics, Math or Computer Science or equivalent required.
  • Currently studying for, or completed a postgraduate degree related to linear optics, fault tolerance
or another aspect of quantum computing.
  • Knowledge of quantum information is required. Familiarity with some of the following is desirable: quantum networks, graph states, stabilizer methods, quantum error-correcting codes, linear optical quantum computing, error modelling, graphical calculus (e.g, tensor networks, ZX calculus).
  • Experience programming in Python, C++ or similar languages.
  • Competent use of collaborative software development tools (e.g., GitHub) is desirable.
  • A creative and adaptable approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative team.
The interview process

Expect at least two interviews with the hiring team and HR. In these interviews we are keen to understand your experience, skills, and how your values align with our teams. We are also keen to hear on what you would like to get out of your internship and what your goals are. Once interviews are complete, we match students to relevant internship projects in our hiring teams.
ย
Successful candidates are required to complete background checks prior to commencing their internship. These include a National Police Check and verification of employment and education qualifications.
