What is an architect in training?

An Architect In Training (AIT) is an entry-level professional who has completed a degree in architecture and is working toward becoming a licensed architect. AITs typically work under the supervision of a licensed architect, gaining practical experience required for licensure. They assist with design, drafting, project management, and other architectural tasks while logging the experience hours needed for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This role is a crucial step in the progression from architectural education to full professional licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architect in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect In Training, you need a solid background in architectural design, drafting, and building codes, generally supported by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward completing the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and convey design concepts clearly. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to projects, meeting client needs, and progressing toward architectural licensure.

What are some common challenges faced by an architect in training and how can they be overcome?

As an Architect In Training, you'll often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple project deadlines, adapting to evolving client requirements, and mastering various design and drafting software. Additionally, transitioning academic knowledge into practical solutions can require guidance and patience. Overcoming these hurdles often involves proactive communication with senior architects, seeking regular feedback, and dedicating time to developing both technical and soft skills within a collaborative team environment.

What is the difference between Architect In Training vs Architectural Designer?

AspectArchitect In TrainingArchitectural Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a professional degree in architecture and is working towards licensureUsually holds a degree in architecture or related field, but not necessarily pursuing licensure
Work EnvironmentWorks under supervision in architecture firms, assisting with design and documentationWorks on design development, drafting, and project presentations, often in similar settings
Industry UsageCommonly used during the licensure process, indicating a candidate in trainingUsed for professionals involved in design work but not yet licensed

The main difference is that an Architect In Training is actively working towards licensure and typically works under supervision, while an Architectural Designer may have a similar educational background but is not necessarily pursuing licensure at that moment. Both roles involve design and drafting, but the Architect In Training is on the path to becoming a licensed architect.

ABOUT THE JOB:

The Manager, Commercial Training & Onboarding leads the operational execution, delivery, and continuous improvement of onboarding for all WillScot Commercial roles. Working closely with the Sr. Director of Commercial Learning & Enablement, who owns program strategy, architecture, and design, this role manages program specifics, monthly in-person training at our WillScot Phoenix Support Center and 30-, 60-, and 90-day reinforcement that accelerates role readiness and reinforces the WillScot Way. The role leads 2-3 trainers and collaborates with the broader Enablement team and cross-functional business partners.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:
  • Lead the day-to-day management and execution of onboarding for all Commercial roles. Operationalize program strategy and design established by the Sr. Director of Commercial Learning & Enablement by managing schedules, cohorts, communications, logistics, learning materials, stakeholder participation, learner support, and consistent delivery standards.
  • Manage the end-to-end onboarding experience from pre-boarding through 30-, 60-, and 90-day role readiness. Coordinate with Human Resources, hiring managers, Commercial leaders, the Training & Enablement team, and business subject matter experts to deliver structured reinforcement, coaching activities, manager resources, progress check-ins, and readiness milestones that reinforce the WillScot Way.
  • Lead and facilitate monthly, in-person New Hire Training onsite at WillScot's Phoenix Support Center. Coordinate executive speakers, subject matter experts, and functional partners, and ensure learning experiences effectively build knowledge of WillScot solutions, commercial processes, systems and tools, customer engagement practices, operating rhythms, culture, and role expectations.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of 2-3 Commercial Trainers. Establish priorities, delivery expectations, operating rhythms, and development plans; conduct facilitation observations; provide performance coaching; allocate resources across onboarding needs; and promote consistency, collaboration, learner focus, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with the broader Commercial Learning & Enablement team and cross-functional partners across Commercial Leadership, Product, Marketing, Operations, Human Resources, Customer Experience, and other functions. Integrate onboarding with Commercial Excellence Academy learning journeys, role-based playbooks, reinforcement programs, certifications, communications, and change initiatives; monitor completion, learner feedback, competency attainment, speed-to-productivity, manager participation, and retention trends to recommend operational improvements.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum five years of experience in training, learning and development, onboarding, sales enablement, or a related field, including program management and instructor-led facilitation.
  • Minimum five years of direct people-leadership experience; experience leading trainers preferred.
  • Experience supporting a sales or Commercial organization and managing role-based onboarding programs preferred.
  • High level of proficiency in Salesforce required; experience with learning management systems, virtual learning platforms, e-learning software, and authoring tools preferred.
  • Strong program and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple monthly cohorts, priorities, stakeholders, and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, facilitation, presentation, public speaking, coaching, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to translate established learning strategies, curricula, and competency frameworks into scalable, repeatable learner experiences without owning the overall program architecture or design.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop trainers and collaborate effectively within a matrixed Enablement organization and across business functions.
  • Ability to analyze learner feedback and onboarding performance data, identify operational improvements, and communicate progress and risks clearly.
  • Ability to provide responsive learner and manager support through in-person, virtual, and phone-based channels as needed.

Work Environment:

  • This is a 100% in-office role based at the Phoenix Support Center. The position leads monthly, in-person New Hire Training onsite at WillScot's Phoenix Headquarters and regularly collaborates with the broader Commercial Learning & Enablement team and cross-functional business partners.
