What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architect in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architect In Training, you need a solid background in architectural design, drafting, and building codes, generally supported by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward completing the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is typically required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and convey design concepts clearly. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to projects, meeting client needs, and progressing toward architectural licensure.

What are some common challenges faced by an architect in training and how can they be overcome?

As an Architect In Training, you'll often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple project deadlines, adapting to evolving client requirements, and mastering various design and drafting software. Additionally, transitioning academic knowledge into practical solutions can require guidance and patience. Overcoming these hurdles often involves proactive communication with senior architects, seeking regular feedback, and dedicating time to developing both technical and soft skills within a collaborative team environment.

How much does an architect in training earn?

An architect in training typically earns between $40,000 and $55,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and firm size. As they gain skills and work toward licensure, their salary generally increases. Interns often work under supervision and may receive benefits similar to other entry-level professionals in architecture firms.

What is an architect in training?

An Architect In Training (AIT) is an entry-level professional who has completed a degree in architecture and is working toward becoming a licensed architect. AITs typically work under the supervision of a licensed architect, gaining practical experience required for licensure. They assist with design, drafting, project management, and other architectural tasks while logging the experience hours needed for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). This role is a crucial step in the progression from architectural education to full professional licensure.

What is the difference between Architect In Training vs Architectural Designer?

AspectArchitect In TrainingArchitectural Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a professional degree in architecture and is working towards licensureUsually holds a degree in architecture or related field, but not necessarily pursuing licensure
Work EnvironmentWorks under supervision in architecture firms, assisting with design and documentationWorks on design development, drafting, and project presentations, often in similar settings
Industry UsageCommonly used during the licensure process, indicating a candidate in trainingUsed for professionals involved in design work but not yet licensed

The main difference is that an Architect In Training is actively working towards licensure and typically works under supervision, while an Architectural Designer may have a similar educational background but is not necessarily pursuing licensure at that moment. Both roles involve design and drafting, but the Architect In Training is on the path to becoming a licensed architect.

Job description

Founded in 2001 on the belief that success begins with quality, Qwaltec is a certified Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) headquartered in Tempe, Arizona. We are a team of systems engineers, technical training consultants, program managers, and mission operations experts with deep experience supporting the DoD, NASA, United States Space Force, and commercial aerospace customers. From ground system operations and mission control to technical training and software engineering, Qwaltec brings space within reach, and we are growing.
We strive for excellence and accountability, and we do everything we can to exceed expectations while acting with integrity and compassion. We invest in relationships, and we value openness, honesty, and fairness in all our endeavors.
Qwaltec is seeking a Solutions Architect to lead the design and evolution of technical solutions for spacecraft Mission Operations Centers (MOCs), satellite ground systems, and antenna networks. This is a high-visibility role at the intersection of engineering, operations, and business growth: you will architect solutions for current and prospective customers, working closely with Qwaltec's customer-facing and business development teams to shape offerings, respond to solicitations, and win new mission work.
The ideal candidate brings broad experience across the mission lifecycle, including experience as an operator on console, an engineer designing ground systems, a technical lead responsible for architecture integrity, and a contributor to capture and proposal efforts. You understand how MOCs, ground stations, and antenna networks come together to fly spacecraft across orbital regimes and program risk postures, from Class A missions to prototype R&D. Experience with USSF, NASA, and/or NOAA architectures is highly desirable.
This position may be performed remotely within the United States; however, preference will be given to candidates based in or willing to relocate to Phoenix/Tempe, AZ area. Periodic travel to Qwaltec's Tempe headquarters, customer sites, and industry events is expected.
Key Responsibilities:
โ€ข Architect end-to-end solutions for spacecraft Mission Operations Centers, command and control (C2) ground systems, and antenna/ground station networks for government and commercial customers
โ€ข Translate customer mission operations and ground system requirements into solution architectures that effectively leverage the OrbitCmd powered by Leanspace software platform, products, and integration capabilities.
โ€ข Serve as the senior technical voice in customer engagements by leading architecture discussions, technical exchanges, design reviews, and briefings with senior government and industry stakeholders
โ€ข Partner with business development and capture teams to qualify opportunities, shape win themes, and develop technical strategies for new and existing customers
โ€ข Author and review key technical volumes, white papers, capabilities briefs, and architecture artifacts in support of proposals and solicitation responses
โ€ข Develop reference architectures and system designs using industry and DoD frameworks (e.g., DODAF, MOSA) and modern development practices (Agile/DevOps)
โ€ข Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies, including AI/ML-enabled tools and automation, into mission operations and ground system solutions
โ€ข Guide trade studies, requirements definition, interface analyses, and technical risk assessments for new missions and system upgrades
โ€ข Collaborate with Qwaltec program managers, engineers, and mission operators to ensure proposed solutions are executable, affordable, and aligned with company capabilities
โ€ข Mentor engineering staff and help mature Qwaltec's technical baseline, architecture standards, and solution development processes
โ€ข Represent Qwaltec at industry days, conferences, and networking events (e.g., USSF events, AFCEA, Space Symposium, Ground System Architectures Workshop)
Requirements
โ€ข 15+ years of experience in defense and/or civil space programs spanning mission operations, ground systems engineering, and/or satellite command and control
โ€ข Demonstrated experience architecting or leading the design of Mission Operations Centers, satellite ground systems, and/or antenna network solutions
โ€ข Full lifecycle perspective across spacecraft console operations, ground system design, integration, test, and on-orbit support
โ€ข Experience supporting business development, capture, or proposal efforts, including authoring technical content for competitive solicitations
โ€ข Working knowledge of architecture frameworks and methodologies such as DODAF and MOSA, and familiarity with Agile/DevOps development environments
โ€ข Strong verbal and written communication skills; proven ability to engage credibly with senior government customers, acquisition professionals, and technical teams
โ€ข Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and AI-enabled tools and workflows as applied to mission operations, engineering, and business development
โ€ข U.S. Citizenship required; must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance (candidates must be clearable)
โ€ข Willingness to travel periodically to customer sites, industry events, and Qwaltec's Tempe, AZ headquarters
Preferred Qualifications:
โ€ข Active Top Secret (TS) or TS/SCI clearance strongly preferred
โ€ข Direct experience with USSF, NASA, and/or NOAA mission and ground architectures (e.g., SSC, Space Deltas, NASA mission operations, NOAA satellite ground enterprise)
โ€ข Experience across multiple orbital regimes (LEO, MEO, GEO, HEO/cislunar) and program risk classes, from Class A missions to prototype and R&D efforts
โ€ข Prior roles as chief engineer, program manager, or capture manager on space or ground system programs
โ€ข Track record of authoring winning technical volumes for large ($100M+) solicitation responses
โ€ข Experience with RF/antenna systems, telemetry, tracking, and commanding (TT&C), and ground station operations and maintenance
โ€ข Formal training or certification in AI/ML, program management (PMP), or Agile methodologies (e.g., SAFe)
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, physics, or a related technical field (advanced degree a plus, or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Compensation and Benefits:
โ€ข Salary commensurate with experience, location, and clearance status
โ€ข Competitive benefits package
โ€ข Professional development support and training budget
โ€ข Opportunity to shape the technical direction of a mission-driven, women-owned small business at the forefront of space operations
