What does an architect designer do?

Architect designers are professionals who plan, design, and oversee the construction of buildings and structures. They create detailed drawings and blueprints, considering factors such as functionality, aesthetics, safety, and sustainability. Architect designers work closely with clients, engineers, and construction teams to ensure that projects meet the required specifications and regulations. Their role often includes selecting materials, managing budgets, and ensuring that the final design aligns with the client's vision and needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architect designer?

To thrive as an Architect Designer, you need a solid educational background in architecture, strong design skills, and proficiency in building codes and regulations. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, along with state licensure or certification, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams. These skills and qualities ensure the successful creation of functional, aesthetically pleasing, and compliant structures that meet client needs and industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by architects during the design process, and how are they typically addressed within a team environment?

Architects frequently encounter challenges such as balancing client expectations with budget constraints, ensuring compliance with building codes, and coordinating with engineers and contractors. Effective communication and collaboration within multidisciplinary teams are essential to address these issues. Regular design reviews, using BIM (Building Information Modeling) tools, and maintaining clear documentation help architects identify potential conflicts early and develop creative, practical solutions that satisfy all stakeholders.

Job description

Job Title: Architect / Design Manager

Location: Miami, FL

Salary: Competitive base plus bonus and benefits

The Opportunity

We are working with an active real estate developer delivering luxury condominium projects across the US, based in Miami. As their pipeline continues to grow, they are seeking an AIA, Architect / Design Manager to take ownership of the full design process from the owner developer side.

This is not a pure architecture role. It is a design management position for someone who understands how great buildings are delivered through coordination, discipline, and commercial awareness. The role sits at the centre of consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders, ensuring design intent, programme, and quality are aligned from concept through execution.

The Role

You will be responsible for managing the end-to-end design process on condominium developments, acting as the key interface between external design teams and the internal development organisation. Leading international renowned architectural practices to deliver world-class projects.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the full design process for condo projects from early concept through construction documentation
  • Coordinating external consultants including architects, MEP, structural, and specialist trades
  • Ensuring design teams are aligned, coordinated, and meeting agreed deadlines
  • Providing consultants with clear, timely information required to complete designs effectively
  • Reviewing layouts, unit mixes, and plans to maximise space efficiency and functionality
  • Interfacing internally with development, construction, and leadership teams to gather feedback and adjust designs accordingly
  • Maintaining design quality while balancing cost, programme, and buildability
About You

This role suits someone who has moved, or is ready to move, from the design studio into a developer-led environment.

You are likely to have:

  • A background in architecture by training, education, or licensure
  • Experience working within an architectural or design practice, with exposure to residential, hospitality or condo projects
  • Proven experience project managing design teams, not simply producing drawings
  • Strong coordination skills across multiple consultants and disciplines
  • A practical understanding of how design decisions impact cost, schedule, and delivery
  • Condominium OR hospitality OR branded residential exposure expected
Why This Role
  • A hands-on design leadership role on prominent Miami condominium developments
  • Direct influence over layouts, quality, and execution rather than purely conceptual work
  • Close collaboration with development and construction teams
  • A platform that values design discipline, coordination, and delivery

If you are a design professional who enjoys managing complexity and turning vision into buildable reality, this role will strongly appeal.
