An Archaeology Student studies past human societies through material remains, learning excavation techniques, artifact analysis, and historical research. They often participate in fieldwork, lab analysis, and coursework covering archaeological theory and methods. Students may work on research projects, assist professors, or gain hands-on experience through internships. The goal is to develop skills for a career in archaeology, heritage management, or related fields.
Archaeology Students often participate in field schools, laboratory work, and internships as part of their academic programs. Fieldwork typically involves excavating sites, cataloguing artifacts, conducting surveys, and practicing proper preservation techniques alongside professional archaeologists. In the lab, students may clean, analyze, and record data about artifacts under faculty or supervisor guidance. These hands-on experiences help students build practical skills, deepen their understanding of archaeological processes, and prepare them for advanced studies or entry-level positions after graduation.
To thrive as an Archaeology Student, you need a solid grounding in research methods, analytical thinking, and basic archaeological terminology, usually supported by enrollment in a relevant academic program. Experience with fieldwork tools like trowels, GPS devices, mapping software, and knowledge of archaeological recording systems is highly beneficial. Excellent attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication skills also help students excel in both academic and field settings. These abilities are crucial for accurate data collection, effective collaboration, and the successful completion of archaeological research projects.

Cornell University Department of History of Art and Visual Studies
The Department of History of Art and Visual Studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor faculty position in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology. While seeking to maintain Cornellβs strengths in Greek and Roman visual culture, we welcome applications from scholars who specialize in the region as broadly conceived (including Eurasia, Western Asia, North Africa, and the Western Roman provinces), in keeping with the global outlook of History of Art at Cornell, and who work in diverse methodologies and genres. Given our close relationship with the Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies (CIAMS), candidates must have training in archaeological fieldwork. As this position includes curatorial responsibilities related to Cornellβs plaster cast collection, we welcome candidates with experience in object-based research.
Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate field of study prior to the appointment start date on July 1, 2027. The appointment requires a 2-2 teaching load (typically one lecture course and one seminar each semester) and includes an introductory course, intermediate-level courses of broad interest to students, and advanced undergraduate and graduate seminars on topics of the candidateβs choosing. Responsibilities include teaching, advising, and service to the department and the university. They include occasionally designing and delivering First-Year Writing Seminars (FWS) on a topic of interest in their field, and teaching Cornellβs Advising Seminar for first-year students periodically. The applicant is expected to contribute to the Departmentβs curriculum development and design, and engage with students, staff, and faculty working across a range of disciplines on campus, such as Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, and Near Eastern Studies.
We ask applicants for all faculty positions to share their approaches to fostering learning, research, service, and outreach in a diverse community. Applicants may choose to submit a stand-alone statement or embed the information in other parts of their application materials.
Additional materials may be requested at a later date.
