The Team Leader - Relay/SCADA is responsible for leading a team that performs relay testing, primary relay testing, RTU maintenance, wiring construction, fiber maintenance/testing and in-servicing duties of new relays and substations. This role ensures technicians are scheduled efficiently, verification that job packages are prepared in advance, and communication between field crews, internal departments, and management remains clear and timely. The Team Leader provides general direction, coordinates resources, and ensures all work meets safety, quality, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Support
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Conduct routine check-ins and performance feedback
- Support onboarding and documentation of skill development of new technicians
Scheduling & Workload Management
- Create and maintain daily, weekly, and long-term schedules
- Assign personnel based on skills, workload, and priorities
- Monitor progress and adjust schedules as needed
Job Preparation & Planning
- Ensure all drawings, schematics, and job packages received are complete prior to start of work
- Verify availability of all tools, materials, relays, wiring components, RTUs and test equipment
- Coordinate with engineering and project teams to validate readiness
Cross-Department Coordination
- Serve as primary liaison between technicians and other departments
- Communicate scheduling, job status and field issues
- Coordinate outages, commissioning and job dependencies
Technical Oversight
- Support field commissioning coordination activities
- Review test reports, drawings and documentation for completeness
Administrative & Operational Responsibilities
- Track completion of work orders and test sheets
- Manage resources including overtime, travel and Per Diem
- Support budgeting and quality assurance initiatives
- Maintain clear communication with management
Qualifications - Required
- Understanding of Substation Operations and Maintenance practices
- Demonstrated leadership or coordination experience
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Experience leading field technicians
- Experience scheduling crews
Qualifications - Preferred
- Background in relay protection, SCADA systems, RTUs, or fiber systems
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Knowledge of NERC standards and utility practices
- Associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field
