Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice structural BIM modeler?

To thrive as an Apprentice Structural BIM Modeler, you need a solid understanding of construction principles, basic structural engineering concepts, and a relevant qualification such as a diploma or associate degree in drafting, civil engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD is typically required, along with any relevant BIM certifications. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with engineers, architects, and project teams. These skills are crucial for producing accurate models, ensuring project coordination, and supporting efficient construction workflows.

What is an apprentice structural BIM modeler?

Apprentice Structural BIM Modelers are entry-level professionals who assist in creating and managing Building Information Models (BIM) for structural engineering projects. They work under the supervision of experienced modelers or engineers to produce accurate digital representations of buildings and structures. Their tasks often include drafting structural components, updating models based on design changes, and coordinating with other disciplines. This role is ideal for individuals starting their careers in BIM and structural design, offering hands-on training and experience with industry-standard software.

What are some common challenges faced by apprentice structural BIM modelers when transitioning from traditional drafting to BIM modeling?

One common challenge for Apprentice Structural BIM Modelers is adapting to the collaborative and data-driven nature of BIM workflows compared to traditional drafting. You’ll need to learn new software, such as Autodesk Revit, and understand how to coordinate your models with architects, engineers, and other stakeholders. Navigating model accuracy, managing large datasets, and keeping up with evolving industry standards can also be demanding. However, most teams provide mentorship and structured training to help apprentices build these essential skills.

What is the difference between Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler vs Junior Structural Engineer?

AspectApprentice Structural Bim ModelerJunior Structural Engineer
CredentialsBasic technical training, ongoing BIM coursesBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, BIM software labsDesign offices, project sites
ResponsibilitiesAssist in creating BIM models, learn software toolsDesign calculations, project planning
Industry UsageCommon in architecture and construction firmsEngineering consulting firms, construction companies

The Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler typically focuses on learning BIM software and assisting in model creation under supervision, while the Junior Structural Engineer handles more complex design tasks and calculations. Both roles are essential in the structural design process but differ in experience level and responsibilities.

Job description

Description
We are seeking a Structural Engineer with 0-5 years of experience to join our Denver-based team. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on high-profile local projects across the Front Range while also contributing to diverse national accounts. You will be involved in the full design lifecycle-from initial schematic design and structural modeling to site visits and construction administration.
Whether you are an EIT working toward your license or a newly minted PE, you will find a collaborative environment here that prioritizes technical mentorship and professional autonomy.
Annual Base Salary: $72,000 - $96,000
Additional benefits include medical plans, dental, vision, employee life insurance, 401(k), Flexible Spending Accounts, paid time off, paid holidays and tuition reimbursement.
Requirements
Core Responsibilities
  • Structural Analysis & Design: Perform gravity and lateral analysis for buildings using steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood.
  • National & Local Project Delivery: Support a wide range of project types, including Denver-based multi-family and commercial developments, as well as national retail and industrial programs.
  • BIM Collaboration: Work closely with our BIM team to develop 3D structural models in Revit Structure, ensuring seamless coordination with architectural and MEP partners.
  • Code Compliance: Apply a deep understanding of IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI codes to ensure all designs meet safety and jurisdictional requirements across various states.
  • Construction Administration: Review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and conduct site observations to ensure construction aligns with the structural design intent.
  • Mentorship & Growth: For mid-level candidates, provide guidance to junior staff and assist in the refinement of internal design standards and calculation templates.
Technical Requirements & Skills
  • Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with structural analysis software such as RISA-3D, RAM Structural System, or SAP2000. Proficiency in Revit is highly preferred.
  • Materials Knowledge: Competency in designing with diverse materials, particularly a strong grasp of lateral load paths (wind and seismic).
  • Adaptability: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, transitioning between rapid-turnaround national projects and complex, long-term local developments.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with architects, contractors, and clients.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master's degree preferred).
  • Certification: Active EIT (Engineer-in-Training) or PE (Professional Engineer) license.
  • Experience: 0-5 years of experience in building structural design.
  • Location: Must be based in or willing to relocate to the Denver, CO area.
  • Travel: Availability to travel around the country is desirable
