Bim Automation information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BIM automation specialist?

To thrive as a BIM Automation Specialist, you need expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), proficiency in scripting languages like Dynamo or Python, and a background in architecture, engineering, or construction. Familiarity with BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and relevant APIs or plug-ins is typically required, along with certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication, and collaboration skills make a candidate stand out in cross-disciplinary project environments. These skills are crucial for streamlining workflows, improving project accuracy, and enabling efficient collaboration in complex building projects.

How does a BIM automation specialist typically collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams during a project?

A BIM Automation Specialist works closely with architects, engineers, and construction teams to streamline project workflows by developing and implementing automation tools, scripts, and processes within BIM software. They facilitate data exchange, automate repetitive modeling tasks, and ensure consistency across project documentation. Effective communication is essential, as the specialist often gathers requirements from team members, provides training on automation solutions, and troubleshoots technical issues to support seamless collaboration and project delivery.

What is the difference between Bim Automation vs Bim Modeler?

AspectBim AutomationBim Modeler

While Bim Automation specialists focus on streamlining BIM processes through scripting and automation, Bim Modelers concentrate on creating and managing detailed BIM models. Both roles require BIM software knowledge, but Bim Automation emphasizes programming skills, whereas Bim Modelers focus on design and modeling expertise.

Is BIM automation a good career path?

BIM automation involves using software tools and scripting to streamline building information modeling processes, making it a valuable skill in architecture, engineering, and construction industries. It offers opportunities for specialization, increased efficiency, and demand for professionals proficient in BIM software like Revit and Dynamo. As the industry increasingly adopts digital workflows, BIM automation can be a promising career choice for those with technical skills and a focus on innovation.

Job description

POSITION

BIM and Field Technician

Full-time position; part-time candidates will also be considered

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The BIM and Field Technician is responsible for managing JRHโ€™s BIM production, overseeing drafting standards, performing field technician work, and implementing new technologies that improve efficiency, accuracy, and project delivery. This role supports both new building structural design and existing building investigation, preservation, and adaptive reuse projects. The ideal candidate is a motivated, forward-thinking, detail-oriented individual who is excited to advance BIM workflows, support engineers in developing construction documents and performing field investigations, and help implement emerging tools such as GPR, LIDAR scanning, digital collaboration platforms, and automation technologies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associateโ€™s or Bachelorโ€™s degree in drafting, engineering technology, or related field (preferred)
  • 2+ years of experience in BIM modeling and structural drafting

TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop Revit models and produce structural construction documents under the direction of project engineers.
  • Manage JRH BIM and drafting standards, including reviewing project models for consistency and assisting with standard updates and rollout.
  • Coordinate JRH structural models with other disciplines.
  • Perform field investigations and building surveys, including field measurements, GPR scanning, LIDAR scanning, photographic documentation, and other methods to document existing structural conditions.
  • Lead the evaluation and implementation of new technologies, including scanning, data processing, BIM automation, and digital workflows to increase efficiency and value.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives tied to drafting quality, technology integration, and project delivery.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in Revit structural modeling, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accurate, high-quality construction documents.
  • Interest or experience in existing building investigation, field surveying and documentation, GPR, LIDAR scanning, point cloud processing, and other non-destructive evaluation or digital capture technologies.
  • Interest in automation tools and digital workflows; familiarity with scripting languages (such as Python or Dynamo) is a plus but not required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to research, learn, and implement new technologies and workflows.
  • Client-focused mindset with the ability to develop positive working relationships.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform field work for extended periods at active construction sites and existing buildings, including walking and standing; navigating uneven surfaces, stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts; bending, crouching, and kneeling; and lifting and carrying field equipment.

COMPENSATION

$75,000-$95,000 annual salary commensurate with experience, plus a competitive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plan with company matching, and professional development support.
