Job Description

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person. OCME offers an opportunity for a selected student to gain valuable experience in the architecture and project management professions within a public service context. The selected student will gain hands-on technical experience through specific field assignments or task-specific office work as well as a mentoring relationship with senior-level technical staff. The selected student will also have the opportunity, through a combination of site visits, and on-the-job training, to learn about the challenges of technical research, technical review, architectural records management, and project management for ongoing projects in buildings under OCME's jurisdiction.
The selected student will assist with tasks to support OCME's Senior Architect and Project Manager. Under limited supervision, tasks will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- reviewing architectural plans prepared by consultants and/or in-house staff for accuracy
- developing and preparing scope of work descriptions for new project needs
- job site walkthroughs
- technical research on regulations governing the built environment
- architectural documentation, records procurement, and follow-up
Tasks also include attending agency meetings, assisting in the preparation of reports, memos, project scopes of work, design sketches, and technical specifications.
SPECIAL NOTE:
Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing.
