What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Apprentice Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apprentice Full Stack Developer, you need a foundational understanding of programming languages like JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, alongside familiarity with both front-end and back-end development concepts. Experience with tools and frameworks such as React, Node.js, Git, and basic database systems, as well as participation in coding bootcamps or relevant certifications, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and a willingness to learn new technologies set exceptional candidates apart in this role. These skills enable effective collaboration, adaptability, and the ability to contribute to all layers of application development in a fast-changing tech environment.

What types of projects can an Apprentice Full Stack Developer expect to work on, and how is mentorship typically structured in this role?

As an Apprentice Full Stack Developer, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that span both front-end and back-end development, such as creating web applications, building APIs, and optimizing existing codebases. This collaborative structure is designed to help you gradually take on more responsibility and build confidence in a supportive environment. You'll also have opportunities to participate in daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and team discussions to better understand the full software development lifecycle.

What are Apprentice Full Stack Developers?

Apprentice Full Stack Developers are entry-level professionals who are learning to build both the front-end (user interface) and back-end (server, database) components of web applications. They typically work under the guidance of experienced developers, participating in real-world projects to gain practical skills in various programming languages, frameworks, and development tools. The apprenticeship period is designed to help them understand the full development cycle, from designing interfaces to deploying and maintaining applications. This role is ideal for individuals seeking hands-on experience while building a strong foundation in software development.

What is the difference between Apprentice Full Stack Developer vs Junior Full Stack Developer?

Job Title: IT Specialist (SME) – Full Stack Developer (Java/React)

Location: Lanham, MD 20706 (Hybrid – 2-3 days onsite required)
Clearance Requirement: Active Secret Clearance (Required)

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled IT Specialist (Subject Matter Expert) to join our development team. In this role, you will function as a Full Stack Developer with a strong bias toward backend engineering, while also possessing the frontend expertise to build seamless user interfaces. You will be responsible for architecting, developing, and deploying high-performance, distributed, and containerized applications in a secure, cloud-native environment.

The ideal candidate is not just a coder but a technical leader who understands the intricacies of messaging systems, data grids, and DevSecOps pipelines, ensuring that applications are scalable, resilient, and compliant with government security standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Full Stack Development: Design, develop, and maintain enterprise applications using Java/Spring Boot for backend services and ReactJS for dynamic frontend interfaces.

  • Integration & Middleware: Develop and manage integrations using the webMethods Suite (Integration Server, Universal Messaging) and implement messaging solutions using Red Hat AMQ (ActiveMQ), IBM MQ, or Apache Kafka.

  • Containerization & Orchestration: Build, deploy, and manage containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes. Utilize Helm for Kubernetes package management.

  • Architecture & Performance: Architect solutions leveraging Data Grid technologies (Red Hat Data Grid/Infinispan) for high-performance, low-latency distributed caching. Design microservices following cloud-native best practices.

  • DevSecOps & Automation: Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions (or other IRS-approved tools) to automate build, test, security scanning, and deployment processes.

  • API & Security: Develop and secure APIs (REST/SOAP) utilizing OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect. Ensure compliance with TLS cipher suites, secure coding standards, and automated dependency vulnerability management.

  • Monitoring & Observability: Implement logging and monitoring solutions using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, and AppDynamics to ensure system health and performance.

  • Database Management: Write and optimize complex queries for relational databases including Oracle Exadata, PostgreSQL, and IBM Db2.

Minimum Technical Skillset Requirements

Mandatory Skills:

  • webMethods Suite: Integration Server, Universal Messaging, My webMethods Server.

  • Programming: Java (Expert), Flow, JavaScript.

  • Backend Frameworks: Spring, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Spring-WS.

  • Frontend: ReactJS.

  • APIs & Protocols: AMQP, HTTPS, REST, SOAP, JDBC, JMS, TLS, OpenTelemetry.

  • Messaging Systems: Red Hat AMQ (ActiveMQ), IBM MQ, Apache Kafka.

  • Containerization: Docker/OCI, Kubernetes, Helm.

  • Data Grid: Red Hat Data Grid (Infinispan).

  • Databases: Oracle Exadata, PostgreSQL, IBM Db2.

  • CI/CD & DevOps: GitHub Actions, fully automated CI/CD pipelines.

  • Version Control: Git, GitHub.

  • Monitoring: Prometheus, Grafana, AppDynamics, Splunk, Fluent Bit.

  • Architecture: Production-grade, cloud-native microservices; Kubernetes-based orchestration.

  • Security: OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect, TLS, secure coding, automated security scanning, dependency management, DevSecOps controls.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have):

  • Familiarity with AWS or other cloud environments.

  • Experience with OpenTelemetry for observability.

Clearance & Logistics
  • Security Clearance: Active Secret clearance is mandatory. Candidates without an active Secret clearance will not be considered.

  • Work Location: Lanham, MD 20706 (Hybrid Schedule: Must be able to report onsite as required, typically 2-3 days per week).
