AspectApprentice First Article Inspection As9102Quality Inspector
CertificationsTypically in training, may have basic certificationsOften holds specific quality or industry certifications
Work EnvironmentEntry-level, on-the-job training in manufacturing/aviationRegular inspection roles in manufacturing, aerospace, or automotive
Industry UsageUsed in aerospace manufacturing, especially for initial product validationCommon across various manufacturing sectors for quality assurance

The Apprentice First Article Inspection As9102 role focuses on learning and performing initial inspections according to AS9102 standards, often as part of training. In contrast, a Quality Inspector performs ongoing quality checks, ensuring products meet specifications. While both roles involve inspection, the apprentice role emphasizes learning and compliance with aerospace standards, whereas the quality inspector role is more experienced and broad in scope.

What is AS9102 certification?

AS9102 certification refers to compliance with the AS9102 standard, which specifies the requirements for First Article Inspection (FAI) reports in the aerospace industry. An Apprentice First Article Inspection professional ensures that parts meet design specifications through detailed documentation and inspection processes aligned with this standard.

What does a first article inspector do?

A First Article Inspection (FAI) inspector verifies that a product or part meets design specifications and quality standards before mass production. They review drawings, perform measurements, and document findings using tools like calipers and CMMs, ensuring compliance with standards such as AS9102. This role is essential for quality assurance in manufacturing environments, often requiring attention to detail and knowledge of inspection procedures.

What is required for First Article Inspection?

For an Apprentice First Article Inspection (FAI) in the AS9102 standard, the process requires documenting and verifying that the initial production part meets all engineering, design, and customer requirements. This includes detailed measurement data, compliance with specifications, and proper record-keeping, often supported by inspection tools and calibration of measurement equipment. The FAI report must be completed and approved before full production begins.

Does AS9100 require First Article Inspection?

AS9100, which is a quality management system standard for the aerospace industry, does not explicitly require First Article Inspection (FAI). However, many aerospace customers and contracts, including those following AS9102 standards, often mandate FAI to verify that parts meet design and specification requirements before production. As an Apprentice First Article Inspection AS9102 role, understanding customer requirements and AS9102 standards is essential for compliance and quality assurance.
