What is appraisal review?

Appraisal review is the process of evaluating an appraisal report to ensure its accuracy, completeness, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations. This role typically involves checking for errors, verifying data, and determining whether the methods and conclusions in the appraisal are reasonable and well-supported. Appraisal reviewers help maintain quality control in property valuations, often working within banks, lending institutions, or appraisal management companies. Their work is crucial in real estate transactions, as it helps prevent fraud and ensures fair lending practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an appraisal reviewer?

To thrive as an Appraisal Reviewer, you need a solid understanding of real estate valuation principles, appraisal standards, and regulatory guidelines, often supported by relevant certifications such as a state appraiser license. Familiarity with appraisal management software, databases, and compliance tracking systems is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear written communication help differentiate top performers in this role. These skills ensure accurate, compliant, and unbiased appraisal reviews, which are crucial for risk management and lending decisions.

Staying organized and up-to-date on industry guidelines helps ensure accurate and timely reviews.
