How much do applied mathematics government jobs pay per year?
What is an applied mathematics government job?
An Applied Mathematics Government job involves using mathematical models, statistical analysis, and computational techniques to solve complex problems in public policy, national security, economics, and scientific research. Professionals in this field work in various government agencies, such as the Department of Defense, NASA, or the Census Bureau, to analyze data, optimize operations, and support decision-making. Their work can include risk assessment, cryptography, resource allocation, and predicting trends to inform policy. Strong analytical skills, programming knowledge, and expertise in mathematical modeling are essential for success in these roles.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the applied mathematics government position, and why are they important?
To thrive in an Applied Mathematics Government role, you typically need a strong background in mathematics, statistics, data analysis, and a relevant degree such as applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with analytical software like MATLAB, R, Python, and experience with government databases or modeling tools is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help candidates excel in cross-functional government teams. These skills are essential for delivering rigorous analyses that inform public policy, resource allocation, and decision-making within government agencies.
What kind of jobs can I get with an applied mathematics degree?
What types of projects do applied mathematics professionals typically work on within government agencies?
Applied Mathematics professionals in government agencies often work on projects involving data modeling, statistical analysis, and forecasting to support policy development, resource management, and program evaluation. Their work can include analyzing population trends, optimizing transportation networks, or developing risk assessment models for public health and safety. Collaboration is common with teams of economists, engineers, policymakers, and IT specialists. These roles offer the opportunity to make a significant impact on community well-being and public service outcomes while building a strong foundation for career growth within the public sector.

Job description
* Use dynamical models of sensors, aerodynamics, and actuated systems to evaluate performance at both a system and subsystem level
* Work with real flightโtest and simulation data and apply statistical techniques (regression analysis, hypothesis tests, maximum likelihood estimation) to extract meaningful performance metrics.
* Produce clear written reports and concise oral briefings that senior government sponsors rely on when setting requirements, planning flightโtest campaigns, and deciding on nextโgeneration designs.
* Interact with sponsors and partner organizations, answer technical questions, present results, and incorporate feedback into the next round of analysis.
* Help junior team members learn the same techniques, fostering a collaborative, missionโfocused environment. Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you ... * Hold a B.S. in physics, applied mathematics, engineering, systems engineering, or a closely related technical field.
* Have 3+ years of professional experience doing quantitative analysis or modeling and simulation of complex systems.
* Are comfortable building physicsโbased models (e.g., using Newton's laws, sensor error budgets) and applying basic statistical methods to evaluate the performance of complex systems.
* Possess proficiency with MATLAB, Python, or C++ for scientific computing (writing scripts, plotting results, debugging).
* Have strong written and oral communication skills, and you can explain technical material to both experts and nonโexperts.
* Enjoy working on a team, sharing ideas, and collaborating with people from different disciplines.
* Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You will go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you ... * Have a M.S. or Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline (physics, applied mathematics, engineering, etc.).
* Have experience applying software best practices including objectโoriented programming in C++, MATLAB, or Python, unit testing, continuousโintegration, and Git version control.
* Have applied estimation techniques such as Kalman filtering, particle/unscented filters, or maximumโlikelihood methods that use Fisher information.
* Have direct worked on strategic missile, submarine, or flightโtest programs (e.g., SLBM, ICBM, or related launchโvehicle subsystems).
* Have experience developing requirements and verification plans for new weaponโsystem designs or flightโtest campaigns.
* Are familiar with nextโgeneration inertial measurement units, sensors, and related hardware.
* Possess an active Secret (or higher) clearance at the time you apply.
* Have experience presenting technical results to senior government sponsors and influencing design or testโplanning decisions. About Us Why Work at APL?
