Applications Development Supervisor information

What is an applications development supervisor?

An Applications Development Supervisor is a professional responsible for overseeing a team of software developers who design, build, and maintain application software. They coordinate project activities, ensure coding standards are met, and facilitate communication between developers and other departments. Their role includes managing timelines, mentoring staff, and ensuring that software projects align with organizational goals. They also play a key role in troubleshooting issues and implementing best practices in software development.

How does an applications development supervisor balance technical leadership with personnel management responsibilities?

As an Applications Development Supervisor, you are expected to guide technical decisions while also managing and mentoring your development team. This means dividing your time between overseeing code quality, providing architectural direction, and handling administrative tasks such as performance reviews, hiring, and resource allocation. Successful supervisors maintain open communication, facilitate collaboration between developers and other departments, and ensure project deadlines are met. Balancing these responsibilities is crucial for fostering a productive team environment and achieving organizational goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an applications development supervisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Applications Development Supervisor, you need a solid background in software development, project management, and a relevant degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with development frameworks, version control systems (like Git), and agile methodologies, as well as certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master, are typically valuable. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help you manage teams and bridge gaps between technical and business requirements. These skills ensure projects are delivered efficiently, high-quality applications are produced, and team performance aligns with organizational goals.

About the Position

It has never been a more exciting time to work in the energy industry. The electric distribution grid is in transformation into a smarter, more resilient, cleaner, and greener (solar, wind) grid. Advanced systems for grid monitoring and control will be at the forefront of these efforts. This position requires an Engineer to collaborate with a talented team within Digital and Operations to design, implement, and maintain our leading‑edge technology suite known as the Distributed Energy Management System (DERMS). The DERMS platform will be utilized by Ameren's Electrical Distribution Operations and DER teams to manage and orchestrate Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and their connection to the grid. DERs are decentralized electric generators or energy storage technologies connected to the utility grid including solar farms/fields, rooftop solar, battery storage, and wind generators. From a more technical perspective the DERMS platform is designed around hybrid architecture utilizing both cloud and on‑premise components. In addition, the platform will integrate with many other technologies to enable DER Configuration, Forecasting, Optimization and Control. In this position you will be involved in crafting and building the future of electric utility operations. The position leverages a flexible time work schedule that follows a hybrid model: three days a week at Ameren Headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri and two remote days.

  • Support system integration with enterprise and operational technologies, ensuring alignment with utility architecture and compliance requirements.
  • Partner with internal business units and external vendors to implement DERMS use cases that enable distributed energy resource integration and grid optimization.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including system design artifacts, runbooks, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Transition to ongoing operational support, including monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring high system availability.
