UW Information Technology (UWIT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW's IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UWIT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW Medicine, and research operations around the world, partnering with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service."

UWIT Workday Operations supports the University's faculty, staff and student workers by configuring and supporting UW's Workday platform. Within UWIT Workday Operations the Workday Finance Application Management team supports Workday Finance modules such as Procurement, Grants, Banking/Settlement, and Core Finance. The hallmarks of UWIT Workday Operations are delivering services that are timely, accurate and highly attuned to the fast-paced university environment.

The Software Engineer will support Tier 3 Application Management functions in Workday Finance, a cloud-based finance software system. More specific responsibilities will include coordinating with other Workday Finance Application Management team members to analyze/troubleshoot complex system issues, supporting the configuration and implementation changes to the Workday application, participating in testing/validation of functionality changes, documenting and communicating changes, and collaborating with reporting and integration teams. In performing these duties, the incumbent will analyze business problems and processes to identify functional and non-functional solutions supporting the needs of the University.

As a contributor to the Application Support team, the Software Engineer will serve as a member of the Workday Core Finance team to ensure design, development, configuration, testing and launch of specific features are complete and functional, both independently and in coordination with all other dependent Workday features. Further, this position is responsible for ensuring all dependent integrations, reports and other business needs are consistently maintained and accounted for as continual changes are made to the Workday system. This role will require insight into various business processes and technical considerations and encompass cognizance of relevant compliance/regulatory standards and associated audit/control reporting.


Position Complexities:

  • Complete identification and implementation of complex Workday configuration changes.

  • Troubleshoot advanced system issues.

  • Complete advanced analysis of the Workday release schedule and coordinate with stakeholders to understand implications of release of new features, and associated update priorities.

  • Maintain productive relationships with designated stakeholders to understand policies, procedures, and established standards.

  • Evaluate processes, identify improvement opportunities, and implement required updates/enhancements.

  • Adhere to protocols and standards for facilitating configurations and software changes in an accurate, efficient, and compliant manner.

  • Leverage extensive insight across the spectrum of Workday business process and technical inter-dependencies, exercising cognizance of foundational design concepts, data conventions and workflow dependencies.

  • Contribute to related application support activities as required.

  • Manage high-volume workloads by multi-tasking, coordinating with peers and communicating with customers as required.

  • Balance complex and competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:

The Workday Finance Application Management team delivers a high level of service to customers by collaborating with business partners and other technical teams to address needs in an efficient, accurate and compliant manner.

This position is responsible for maintaining and updating the configuration of the Financial Accounting, Business Assets, Capital Projects, and Planning process areas within Workday. The design, configuration and ongoing maintenance of this functionality will directly impact the University's ability to ensure the integrity of Finance systems.

Position Responsibilities:
Workday Configuration (60%)

  • Leverage knowledge across the spectrum of Workday business process and technical inter-dependencies, utilizing understanding of foundational design concepts, data conventions and workflow dependencies.

  • Conduct systems analysis, identify enhancement opportunities, and implement complex Workday Financial Accounting, Business Assets, Capital Projects, and Planning configuration changes.

  • Provide configuration and administration guidance on system functionality.

  • Under direction, evaluate and assimilate evolving Workday functionality, remaining cognizant of complex system inter-dependencies and associated business process implications.

  • Analyze business problems and processes to identify functional and non-functional solutions supporting the Finance needs of the University.

  • Under direction complete identification and implementation of complex Workday configuration changes.

  • Complete periodic Workday update processes, including testing activities.

  • Develop and maintain manual and automated (Kainos) test scripts to support releases, changes and break fixes.

  • Contribute to related application support activities as required.

  • Collaborate with Integrations and Reporting teams to ensure functionality of designated Workday features continue as planned, and any new integrations/reports are completed.

  • Adhere to protocols and standards for facilitating configurations and software changes in an accurate, efficient, and compliant manner.

  • Evaluate processes, identify improvement opportunities, and implement required updates/enhancements in the context of a continuous improvement framework.

Operational Support (20%)

  • Coordinate closely with business owners, tier 2, and other tier 3 resources across the Workday Finance spectrum to troubleshoot advanced Workday Finance system issues, identify resolutions and communicate results.

  • Support resolution of complex user/stakeholder inquiries as needed.

  • Troubleshoot advanced Workday Finance system issues, identify resolutions and communicate results.

  • Support Finance transactions as required, including higher volume windows and major processing activities

Knowledge Management, Training & Communication (20%)

  • Maintain productive relationships with designated stakeholders to understand Finance domain policies, procedures and established standards.

  • Support Workday Technical Operations knowledge management processes, including identification and verification of additions/changes to the working repository of knowledge content

  • Support Workday Technical Operations internal training activities, including development and verification of relevant content.

  • Communicate within Workday Technical Operations critical activities and dates that may have an impact in other areas.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in finance, computer science, information science, or a related field or experience.

  • Minimum three years of experience in the following:

    • Experience working in the Workday Finance domain.

    • Experience working with enterprise Finance systems and the configuration and maintenance thereof, including working specifically with the Workday Finance (or similar) Financial Accounting, Business Assets, Capital Projects, and Planning modules.

    • Experience analyzing complex Finance business processes and documenting requirements.

      Experience supporting system testing and/or data validation activities, including developing and maintaining manual and automated test scripts.

    • Experience with reporting, data, and security in a SaaS environment.

    • Demonstrated ability to understand business and technical design considerations and facilitate problem solving/issue resolution in the context of a customer service frame.

    • Ability to communicate clearly, in writing and in verbal presentations, to both technical and non-technical audiences.

    • Experience interacting with customers, including resolution of complex inquiries and efficient performance during high-volume timeframes.

    • Experience providing production support of mission critical systems.

    • Demonstrated written/oral communication, technical documentation, user liaising, and personal interaction abilities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience performing configuration working in an Agile environment such as Scrum or Kanban.

  • Experience playing an individual contributor role within a shared services environment.

  • Working experience executing relevant business processes at the University of Washington or in a comparable higher education environment.

  • Experience in the use of customer support infrastructure tools, including a case management system, knowledge base and associated reporting tool.
