Application Performance Monitoring information

What is application performance monitoring?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) refers to the process of tracking and managing the performance and availability of software applications. APM tools help organizations detect, diagnose, and resolve issues that can affect the user experience, such as slow response times or application crashes. By monitoring key metrics like response time, error rates, and resource usage, APM solutions enable IT teams to proactively address performance problems and ensure applications run smoothly. This is essential for maintaining high levels of user satisfaction and meeting business goals.

How does an application performance monitoring specialist typically collaborate with development and operations teams to resolve performance issues?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) specialists play a key role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams. They monitor application health, analyze data from APM tools, and proactively identify performance bottlenecks. When issues arise, they work closely with developers to pinpoint code-level problems and with operations to address infrastructure-related concerns, often facilitating cross-team meetings to ensure rapid resolution. This collaborative approach is essential for maintaining optimal application performance and delivering a seamless user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in application performance monitoring, and why are they important?

To excel in Application Performance Monitoring (APM), you need a solid understanding of software development, network infrastructure, and performance analytics, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with APM tools like New Relic, AppDynamics, or Dynatrace, as well as experience with logging, tracing, and monitoring systems, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals quickly diagnose issues and collaborate with development teams. These capabilities are essential to ensure optimal application performance, minimize downtime, and deliver a seamless user experience.

What is the difference between Application Performance Monitoring vs Software Developer?

AspectApplication Performance MonitoringSoftware Developer
Primary FocusMonitoring and optimizing application performance and user experienceDesigning, coding, and maintaining software applications
Required SkillsPerformance analysis, troubleshooting, monitoring toolsProgramming languages, software design, problem-solving
Work EnvironmentIT teams, operations, DevOpsDevelopment teams, coding environments
CertificationsAPM tools certifications, ITIL, cloud certificationsProgramming certifications, computer science degrees

Application Performance Monitoring professionals focus on ensuring applications run smoothly by tracking performance metrics, while Software Developers create and improve the software itself. Both roles are essential in the software lifecycle but serve different functions within the tech industry.

How do you monitor application performance as an Application Performance Monitoring professional?

Application Performance Monitoring (APM) professionals use tools like New Relic, Dynatrace, or AppDynamics to track metrics such as response times, error rates, and throughput. They analyze logs, set alerts for anomalies, and utilize dashboards to identify and resolve performance issues in real-time, often integrating with development and operations teams for continuous improvement.

This role will require close collaboration with stakeholders and technical teams, including third-party vendors, to optimize the utilization of the Murex (Mx3) application.

This role will contribute to the seamless daily operation of the Murex platform, by leading both minor enhancements and major strategic projects and driving continuous evolution and innovation within the Murex platform.

This multifaceted role demands exceptional analytical prowess, critical thinking skills, and change management expertise. You will be instrumental in identifying opportunities to enhance operational efficiency, thriving in high-pressure scenarios while seamlessly navigating across various domains.

What you'll be doing:

  • Ensure Reliability of EOD/Intraday Batches: Oversee and manage the smooth execution of all intraday and end-of-day (EOD) processing within the Murex platform, including start-of-day setups, workflow triggers, scheduled reports, and automated interfaces; promptly investigate and resolve batch failures or delays to minimize operational impact.

  • Platform and Environment Support (Linux/Sybase): Provide advanced technical support for Murex running on RHEL Linux and Sybase ASE; perform system-level troubleshooting (e.g., memory usage, disk space), write and optimize shell scripts, and work with DBAs to diagnose database performance and locking issues.

  • Integration & Interface Management: Monitor, maintain, and enhance numerous real-time and batch-based integration points (e.g., trade feeds, market data, confirmations, settlements etc.) between Murex and upstream/downstream systems (e.g., Bloomberg, Currenex, banking and accounting platforms).

  • Agile Project Management & Delivery: Champion the adoption of agile methodologies within Murex support and delivery streams to better manage workload and improve delivery cadence.

  • Incident and Problem Management: Lead root cause analysis for high-severity production incidents, write detailed incident reports, and implement long-term fixes or preventive measures; coordinate closely with application support, infrastructure, and development teams.

  • Job Scheduling & Automation Oversight: Own and maintain control over Murex scheduler configurations (e.g., Datamart batches, workflows, interface jobs); ensure proper dependency mapping, monitor job health, and continuously improve automation and alerting mechanisms.

  • Release and Change Management: Oversee planning and execution of Murex application upgrades, patches, and configuration changes; coordinate testing, deployment, and rollback procedures to minimize risk and ensure production stability.

  • Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Analyze platform performance across compute, storage, and database layers; identify and resolve bottlenecks affecting latency or throughput, especially during risk or reporting crunch times; recommend tuning changes at the OS, DB, or application level.

  • Technical Documentation & Knowledge Sharing: Maintain accurate and comprehensive technical documentation (runbooks, SOPs, architecture diagrams); mentor junior team members and share best practices for Murex operations and platform management.

  • Audit, Compliance, and Resilience Support: Ensure platform activities comply with IT controls and regulatory standards; support internal and external audits, DR testing, and security hardening efforts.

  • Cross-functional Coordination: Act as a technical liaison between front office, risk, operations, infrastructure, and vendor teams to ensure alignment on priorities and facilitate timely issue resolution and platform enhancements.

  • Other duties and tasks as assigned to support operational objectives

What you'll have:

  • Bachelor's degree in quantitative or technical discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Finance), with experience in end-to-end systems delivery and support.

  • 5+ years' hands-on experience supporting the Murex application in Banking, Financial Services, or Capital Markets or equivalent industry required.

  • Proven track record in IT application support roles for at least 5 years, including system implementations, upgrades, conversions, and testing across complex environments.

  • Strong understanding of Murex architecture, infrastructure, and environment management, including deployment models and system dependencies.

  • Direct experience configuring and supporting MxML workflows, interface development, and troubleshooting data integration points.

  • Advanced proficiency in SQL and shell scripting, with solid hands-on experience in Sybase or Oracle, Linux/UNIX systems, APIs, and web services.

  • Demonstrated expertise in release and configuration management processes, version control tools (e.g., Bitbucket), and CI/CD concepts.

  • Proficiency with operational tools including JIRA, Confluence, Excel, SharePoint, and observability platforms such as Splunk or AppDynamics.

  • Familiarity with ITIL practices for incident, problem, and change management; able to lead root cause analysis and implement preventive solutions.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to collaborate across technical teams, business stakeholders, and vendors.

  • This role will require work after scheduled hours, weekends or holidays to support operational incidents or customer needs with little notice. The work is computer-based and often performed seated. Frequent visual attention is required.
