Department Focus

The Original Equipment (OE) group supports business needs and continuous improvement efforts through proper technical product and engineering design support as well as appropriate development of employees and management.  The OE group is a business unit that encompasses quoting, engineering, quality, project management, production planning and procurement.

Job Description and Duties:
Due to Federal Contract requirements, US Citizenship is required for this position.
Principle Duties:

Provides a high level of non-supervisory engineering work on broad project assignments though all phases of new unit design, development, manufacture, test, and commissioning.  Takes ownership of and drives assignments, with limited guidance or intervention required to progress work. Works with Lead Engineers and Project managers to understand and prioritize assigned work. Provides technical expertise and work direction to colleagues who are working together on assigned project tasks.

Principal duties performed in collaboration with the Lead Unit Design Engineer or Engineering Manager consist of, but are not limited to:

  • Translate contract design specifications and code requirements into the requisite product design of components, subassemblies, and assemblies. Assist Lead Unit Design Engineer in providing technical oversight to ensure Code and contract requirements are met.
  • Engaged as primary engineering analyst utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software to support the needs of the OE group. The analyses may include but are not limited to stress/structural analyses, frequency analyses, seismic analysis, and thermal analyses.
  • Produce reports to summarize and present results of calculations and FEA simulations. Provide recommendations to optimize or improve designs based on results of simulations.
  • Support all aspects of unit design as assigned by the Lead Unit Design Engineer or Engineering Manager, including, but not limited to, initial planning, concepting, mechanical design, material selection, calculations, and test plan creation. Collaborate with the Lead Unit Design Engineer and Engineering Manager to recommend appropriate design strategy for conceptual and product development. Identify pros, cons, and risks of design choices, both during and downstream from the design phase.
  • Author, check, and approve most types of contract documents and drawings at the senior level as needed to support OE contracts. These may include design calculations, analysis, drawings, test reports, design code required items, quality program documents, bills of material, and more.
  • Execute against established schedules, producing progress reports as required. Identify tasks and priorities and assist the Lead Unit Design Engineer with setting hours estimates and adhering to targets/deadlines.
  • Interface with customers and vendors as required in the performance of design activities.
  • Performs self-check of completed work, develops self-confidence, mentors, counsels and provides guidance to peers and team as directed by the Lead Unit Design Engineer and Engineering Manager. Assists Lead Unit Design Engineer and Engineering Manager in identifying training courses for self and others to develop required skills.
  • Promotes in-house mechanical design excellence by suggesting design and analysis tools, techniques and process improvements. Participates in or leads development projects related to the expansion and improvement of company standards, processes, and procedures.

Engineers in this role will be expected to apply engineering fundamentals and use their broad working knowledge of mechanical design, stress calculations, analyses, and manufacturing to solve varying and complex problems. Some potentially relevant areas of knowledge and experience include structural design and vibration, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, machine design and assembly, rotordynamics, root cause analysis, and material selection. Some contracts require work that is first-of-its kind for the company, with no prior references.

Secondary Duties

Activities outside the scope of new unit design may include:

  • Application Engineering and Sales - in the preparation of proposals, application of products, interpreting specifications, providing supplementary information and modifications to assure compliance to application requirements.
  • Shop and Field Service – provide technical assistance to existing clients in the operation, installation, maintenance of Hayward Tyler provided equipment.
  • Manufacturing – Provide technical assistance to the manufacturing floor as required to achieve specified design requirements and resolution of conflicts that arise in attaining specified design and contractual specifications.
  • Training – Senior Design Engineers may be asked to lead training of colleagues in their areas of expertise.

Other related duties may be assigned as needed to support the successful completion of contracts, with non-engineering related duties only occasionally.

Minimum qualifications:
  • Due to Federal Contract requirements, US Citizenship is required for this position.
  • BSME and 5-10 years of mechanical engineering design and analysis in the field of industrial rotating machinery such as pumps, turbines or compressors. 
  • Professional Engineer Registration or ability to gain registration
  • Concentration in power generation, nuclear, or chemical process industries is a plus. 
  • Strong SolidWorks or solid modeling skills in other software.
  • Experience conducting linear stress analysis with manual or finite element analysis techniques.
  • Experience with some FEA analysis types such as static, thermal, frequency, transient, and non-linear.
  • Exhibit a thorough understanding of pertinent codes, governing regulations and industry practice.  Demonstrated experience utilizing the ASME Code Section VIII or Section III desired.
  • Ability to read & interpret engineering drawings, standards and specifications. Comfortable with GD&T.
  • Comprehensive understanding of mechanical engineering principles associated with the design, analysis and operation of centrifugal pumps
  • Expected travel is less than 10% yearly
  • Proficient in SolidWorks, ANSYS, MathCad, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, great at simplifying problems, communicates well with all people.
  • Possess good attention to detail, personal organization, independent work ethic, manages time well, and drives tasks through to completion.
