What is apparel design?

Apparel design is the process of creating clothing and accessories by conceptualizing, sketching, and developing garment ideas. Designers consider factors such as fabric, color, functionality, and style to produce wearable and appealing fashion pieces. They may work for fashion brands, manufacturers, or as independent creators, and their work involves staying up-to-date with trends and understanding consumer preferences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apparel designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Apparel Designer, you need strong skills in fashion design, garment construction, textile knowledge, and often a degree in fashion or a related field. Proficiency with design software like Adobe Illustrator, CAD systems, and familiarity with industry-standard pattern-making tools is crucial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help set designers apart in a competitive market. These abilities are vital for translating ideas into marketable garments that meet consumer trends and production standards.

What are some common challenges faced by apparel designers when collaborating with production teams?

Apparel designers often encounter challenges in translating creative concepts into technically feasible garments, especially when working closely with production teams. Differences in material availability, cost constraints, and manufacturing capabilities can require designers to adjust their original ideas. Effective communication and flexibility are essential, as designers must frequently provide detailed specifications and adapt their designs to ensure both aesthetic quality and production efficiency. Building strong relationships with pattern makers and manufacturers helps streamline this process and leads to better final products.

Graduates can work in clothing manufacturing, retail, or start their own fashion brands, often utilizing skills in CAD software, fabric selection, and trend analysis.

We are seeking a detail-oriented Technical Designer to support seasonal apparel collections from concept through production. This is an opportunity to join a growing lifestyle and apparel organization known for creating meaningful gifts, statement jewelry, and apparel that inspire connection and confidence.

The Opportunity

As the Technical Designer, you will be the fit and construction expert for apparel styles across the business. You will partner closely with Design, Production, Sourcing, and vendor teams to ensure products meet quality, fit, measurement, and production-readiness standards.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and maintain fit, measurement, grading, and construction standards for seasonal apparel collections.
  • Create and manage technical specification packages, flat sketches, measurement details, and "how to measure" documentation.
  • Lead fit sessions with designers and models; document fit notes and guide revisions through sample approval.
  • Partner with factories and vendor teams to resolve fit, construction, and technical challenges.
  • Support product development from initial concept through pre-production, ensuring approved samples and final tech packs are production ready.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to maintain seasonal timelines, quality standards, and clear product handoffs.
  • Provide technical support for quality control, product specifications, and production decisions.
  • Mentor and manage team members as the organization grows.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Apparel Technical Design or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of relevant technical apparel design experience.
  • Strong expertise in patternmaking, sewing, garment construction, grading, fitting, tech packing, and flat sketching.
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and proficiency with Excel for specifications and grading.
  • Experience with digital pattern design; 3D technical design experience is a plus.
  • A highly organized, proactive, detail-oriented approach and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively across internal and external teams.

If you are passionate about apparel fit, construction, and bringing high-quality products to market, we encourage you to apply.
