What is an AP accountant?

AP Accountants, or Accounts Payable Accountants, are professionals responsible for managing a company's outgoing payments and financial obligations to vendors and suppliers. They process invoices, verify and reconcile accounts, ensure timely payments, and maintain accurate financial records. AP Accountants play a crucial role in maintaining positive relationships with vendors and supporting the overall financial health of an organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AP accountant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AP Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, attention to detail, and experience with accounts payable processes, typically supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or Oracle, and possibly certification like Certified Accounts Payable Professional (CAPP), is often required. Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you manage deadlines and collaborate with vendors and internal teams. These skills ensure accurate financial records, timely payments, and smooth financial operations within an organization.

What are some common challenges faced by AP accountants when managing high-volume invoice processing, and how can they be addressed?

AP Accountants often encounter challenges with high-volume invoice processing, such as keeping track of numerous invoices, ensuring accuracy, and meeting payment deadlines. These challenges can lead to errors or delayed payments if not managed carefully. Implementing robust organizational systems, leveraging automation tools, and maintaining clear communication with vendors and internal departments can help streamline the process. Regularly reconciling accounts and following standardized procedures also contribute to minimizing mistakes and improving efficiency.

Job description

Senior Accountant | Hennepin County, MN

$85,000–$100,000 Base Salary | Full-Time, In Person

Axis Talent Group is partnering with a rapidly growing consumer-products business to hire its first dedicated in-house accounting professional.

This is not a narrow corporate accounting position. You will become the company’s hands-on financial operator—taking ownership of cash management, AP, AR, budgeting, forecasting and financial processes while working directly with executive leadership.

The company already uses an outside accounting firm for bookkeeping and monthly close. Your job will be to direct that relationship, improve the quality and timeliness of financial information, and build the internal systems required to support continued growth.

What You’ll Own

  • Manage AP from invoice through approval and payment
  • Oversee AR, customer reconciliations, statements and collections
  • Monitor daily cash flow and upcoming inventory obligations
  • Coordinate domestic and international vendor payments
  • Manage the outside accounting firm and support an accurate monthly close
  • Lead departmental budgeting and budget-versus-actual reviews
  • Improve forecasting across sales, marketing, inventory and purchasing
  • Establish stronger processes for sales tax, commissions and financial controls
  • Identify unnecessary costs and opportunities to improve profitability

What We’re Looking For

  • 4+ years of hands-on accounting experience
  • Direct responsibility for AP, AR and month-end accounting
  • Strong QuickBooks Online experience
  • Background in e-commerce, consumer products, retail, wholesale, distribution, importing or another inventory-based business
  • Understanding of inventory purchasing, vendor terms and cash-flow planning
  • Confidence working directly with executives and outside accounting partners

Why Consider It?

  • Become the first internal finance hire
  • Work directly with company leadership
  • Build processes instead of inheriting layers of bureaucracy
  • Influence financial decisions across the entire business
  • Clear advancement potential toward Accounting Manager and Controller
  • Join a profitable, expanding organization where financial discipline directly affects growth

Compensation and Benefits

  • $85,000–$100,000 base salary
  • SIMPLE IRA with 3% company match
  • 15 days of PTO
  • Seven paid holidays
  • Full-time, in-person position in Hennepin County, Minnesota

This opportunity is best suited for an accountant who wants broader ownership, direct access to leadership and the chance to build the financial foundation of a growing company.
