What are Antenna Systems Engineers?

Antenna Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize antennas and antenna systems for various applications such as telecommunications, aerospace, defense, and consumer electronics. They are responsible for ensuring that antennas meet performance specifications, comply with regulations, and are integrated effectively with surrounding hardware and systems. Their work often involves simulation, testing, troubleshooting, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex electromagnetic and signal propagation challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Antenna Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Antenna Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electromagnetics, RF engineering, and antenna design, typically with a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with simulation tools such as HFSS, CST, and MATLAB, as well as experience using vector network analyzers and antenna measurement systems, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for excelling in this role. These competencies ensure the development of high-performance antenna systems that meet technical specifications and project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by Antenna Systems Engineers during the design and integration process?

Antenna Systems Engineers often encounter challenges such as mitigating interference from nearby electronic devices, optimizing antenna placement within limited space constraints, and balancing performance requirements with cost and manufacturability. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams—including RF engineers, mechanical designers, and system integrators—is essential to resolve these issues effectively. Additionally, adapting to rapidly evolving wireless standards and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements are ongoing aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Antenna Systems Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectAntenna Systems EngineerRF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, specialized in antennas or RFBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF or Communications focus
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and optimizing antenna systems in labs or fieldDesigning and testing RF circuits and systems in labs or production
Industry UsageTelecommunications, aerospace, defense, satelliteWireless communications, mobile devices, radar, satellite

Both roles involve RF principles, but Antenna Systems Engineers focus specifically on antenna design and integration, while RF Engineers work on broader RF circuit and system development. They often collaborate but have distinct specializations within the wireless and communications industries.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.
  • Job Description

As aLevel III Antenna Design Engineer, you will design the physical hardware that forms the backbone of our in-space communication network. You will be a foundational member of a new, in-house team tasked with creating the next generation of high-frequency antennas for Blue Origin's space vehicles. This is a unique opportunity to work on the antenna system design from the ground up.

Join our dynamic team as a Engineer, where you will play a key role in the design, analysis, simulation, testing, and integration of high-performance antenna systems for our next-generation Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. In this role, you will address complex technical challenges related to reflector geometries, feeds, and RF performance, ensuring reliable, high-throughput connectivity for users worldwide.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Support design and develop antenna systems, including reflectors, feeds, radiating elements and sub-reflectors (Q, V and E-bands).

    • Perform critical electromagnetic (EM) simulations using tools like HFSS, CST, and TICRA to optimize antenna performance.

    • Collaborate closely with RFIC/MMIC, T/R module, DSP, mechanical, and thermal engineers to define requirements and ensure a cohesive system design.

    • Support prototype fabrication, assembly, and RF testing (near-field, far-field, and environmental testing).

    • Support the entire hardware lifecycle, guiding the fabrication, characterization, and environmental qualification (e.g., thermal-vac, vibration, radiation) of antenna systems.

    • Document designs, analyses, and test results in technical reports and reviews.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • B.S. in Electrical Engineering with 10+ years of experience in RF antenna design or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 7+ years of experience in RF antenna design.

    • Solid understanding of electromagnetic theory and its application to antenna design, particularly phased arrays.

    • Proven experience supporting the design and development of antennas and associated hardware.

    • Proficiency with at least one major 3D electromagnetic simulation tool (e.g., TICRA, HFSS, CST).

    • Understanding of the trade-offs between different beamforming architectures (analog, digital, hybrid).

    • Familiarity with antenna measurement techniques and anechoic chamber testing.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • M.S. in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Electromagnetics or Antennas.

    • Track record of taking a complex antenna system from initial concept through to production and successful deployment, ideally for space applications.

    • Experience designing and developing high-frequency antennas at mm-Wave (Q, V, E-band).

    • Familiarity with RFIC/MMIC technologies and T/R module design considerations.

    • Knowledge of array calibration techniques and algorithms.

    • Experience with aerospace, defense, or wireless communication systems.
