What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an animation apprenticeship, and why are they important?

To excel in an Animation Apprenticeship, you need a solid understanding of animation principles, basic drawing skills, and a portfolio demonstrating creative abilities. Familiarity with industry-standard software like Adobe Animate, Toon Boom, or Autodesk Maya is typically expected, and completion of relevant art or animation coursework can be beneficial. Strong communication, openness to feedback, and a willingness to learn are important soft skills that stand out in this role. These skills ensure you can quickly adapt, collaborate with experienced animators, and contribute effectively to production projects.

What kinds of projects or tasks does an animation apprentice typically work on during their apprenticeship?

Animation Apprentices often support more experienced team members by assisting with tasks such as storyboarding, character design, in-betweening, or basic motion animation segments. They might also contribute to asset preparation, background art, or participate in brainstorming sessions for creative concepts. Depending on the studio, apprentices can be involved in ongoing projects from animation for television and movies to web and game content. This hands-on experience helps apprentices develop practical skills, gain exposure to professional workflows, and prepare for more advanced roles in the animation industry.

What is an animation apprenticeship?

An Animation Apprenticeship is a structured training program that allows aspiring animators to gain hands-on experience while working alongside industry professionals. Apprentices typically learn various aspects of animation, such as 2D or 3D animation, character design, and storyboarding. This role combines on-the-job training with mentorship, helping apprentices develop technical skills and industry knowledge. It’s a great way to build a portfolio, gain industry connections, and potentially transition into a full-time animation career.

Job description

At Elevation Church, we look to link arms in ministry with those who are passionate about stepping into their God-given calling. While we're a staff from all different backgrounds and walks of life, our mission is the same - to reach people with the Gospel. We're grounded in scripture and guided by our values, so check out our website (www.elevationchurch.org) to be sure you're aligned before you step into the application process with us, particularly paying attention to our Beliefs and our Code.
OVERVIEW
The Video Director plays a key role in shaping the Sunday worship experience by helping lead the creative vision and execution of storytelling, live elements, and video content-crafting moments that engage, inspire, and clearly communicate the mission and message of the church.
This person is both a visionary and a hands-on director, responsible for developing ideas, leading production, and delivering high-quality creative content and experiences.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the creative direction and execution of video projects from concept to final delivery
  • Collaborate with the Creative Director, Programming Director, and programming team to develop compelling visual storytelling for weekend experiences, series, and campaigns
  • Direct video shoots, including lighting, camera operation, framing, and on-set leadership
  • Oversee pre-production planning (scripting, storyboarding, locations, casting, scheduling, and logistics)
  • Guide post-production processes, including editing, color grading, and sound design, to ensure high-quality deliverables
  • Build and maintain visual standards that elevate the church's brand and storytelling style
  • Partner with producers, editors, designers, audio, production, and other creatives to execute projects with excellence and efficiency
  • Participate in the development of interns, apprentices, and volunteers, creating opportunities for growth and ownership
  • Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Support live events and special productions as needed
  • Stay current with storytelling trends, film techniques, and cultural moments to keep content fresh and relevant
MUST-HAVES
  • Active participation in a church (we look for a lifestyle of inviting people to church, volunteering, generosity, and prioritizing community)
  • 5-6+ years of experience in creative direction, film directing, or video production
  • Strong passion for storytelling and using video to communicate life change
  • Proven experience directing video productions on set, including working with talent and production crews (agency, freelance, church, or media environment)
  • High-level understanding of camera systems, lighting, and production workflows
  • Proficiency in post-production workflows and tools (Adobe Premiere Pro, Davinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Frame.io / Dropbox Replay)
  • Ability to lead creative teams and give clear, constructive direction
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to thrive under pressure and adapt quickly in a fast-moving environment
NICE-TO-HAVES
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment or ministry setting
  • Knowledge of live production and broadcast environments
  • Experience working with motion graphics, animation, or AI-assisted creative tools (Adobe After Effects, Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop, Cinema 4D or Blender, Runway)
  • Familiarity with social and digital content strategies

DAY-TO-DAY
  • We're a Sunday-Thursday work environment. Monday-Thursday, we're in the office (8:30AM - 5PM); on Sunday, we're supporting the weekend worship experience either directly in our roles or by choosing a weekly serving opportunity at one of our Elevation Church campuses.
  • There's a lot to accomplish each week, so we're pretty fast-paced. We're also not afraid to pivot a strategy or project quickly to meet the needs of the weekend - adaptability is a key competence for us.
  • Yes, we work hard. But we're good at playing hard, too. We're a creative staff, so there's no shortage of activities around our offices to have some fun!
  • You can't help but grow on our staff. You'll be around some incredible people. Professional development opportunities will be all around you, both in structured and unstructured ways.
  • We expect you to be disciplined in your spiritual practices - be in your Bible, spend time with the Lord in prayer, meditate on and apply the weekly sermon.
  • Bring your full self to every project, conversation, and initiative at hand.

BENEFITS
  • Elevation Church pays 100% of every employee's medical benefits for full-time staff
  • 403b with 4% match
  • Dental & Vision benefits
  • Paid time off for life, vacations, and rest
  • Elevation Church subsidizes 6 sessions of counseling annually
  • Basic Life Insurance for employee, spouse, and child(ren)
