Job Summary/Description
The Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Angelo State University seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor of Art with a specialization in Painting and Drawing starting August 2026. This full-time, tenure-track position calls for an individual with a commitment to undergraduate studio art education with evidence of excellent technical and conceptual skills to instruct students in all level Painting and Drawing courses including Figure Drawing, and, foundation art courses as assigned, including Introduction to Art.
Typical Duties/Job Duties
  • Teaching and Mentorship: Instruct undergraduate studio art courses ranging from foundation drawing to advanced painting and figure drawing. This includes conducting critiques, academic advising, and mentoring of BFA art students.
  • Creative Research: Maintain a significant, ongoing studio practice with a record of professional accomplishments, such as solo and group exhibitions at local, regional, national or international levels.
  • Curriculum Development: Lead or collaborate on contemporary revisions of the curriculum, integrating traditional skills with conceptual and interdisciplinary practices.
  • Service: Serve on departmental and university committees. Manage studio facilities and assist in the coordination of the Painting and Drawing program. Participate in student recruitment and retention. Participate in departmental and Art Area meetings and events. Maintain regular office hours. Work collaboratively and productively with faculty colleagues to meet the needs of the student body.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge
  • Strong proficiency in a wide range of 2D media, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, and related drawing/painting techniques.
  • Thorough understanding of contemporary art theory, trends, and critical practices within the field.
Skills
  • Skill in effectively recruiting and retaining students within the Painting and Drawing concentration.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with students and collaborating with colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain an active and supportive presence through regular office hours and student consultations.
Abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with faculty and staff to support departmental and student needs.
  • Ability to participate fully in departmental and Art Area meetings, events, and initiatives.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive academic environment through professionalism, reliability, and teamwork.
Minimum Qualifications
Terminal degree required. Master of Fine Arts (MFA), or equivalent, in Painting and Drawing.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates are preferred to have at least two years of successful collegiate level teaching experience in painting and drawing beyond graduate school, or equivalent.
Physical Requirements
Standing/sitting, bending, lifting, carrying as necessary per the job duties.
