What is an angel investor in a startup?

An angel investor is an individual who provides capital to early-stage startups, typically in exchange for equity or convertible debt. These investors often use their own funds to help new companies get off the ground before they are able to attract venture capital. Angel investors may also offer mentorship, industry connections, and business advice to startup founders. Their investment helps startups bridge the gap between initial funding from family or friends and larger rounds of funding from venture capitalists.

What are some common challenges faced by angel investors when working with early-stage startups?

Angel investors often encounter challenges such as assessing the viability of a startup with limited historical data, managing the risks of high failure rates, and balancing involvement without overstepping into daily operations. Building trust with founders and providing valuable mentorship while maintaining a professional boundary can also be complex. Additionally, angel investors need to navigate the uncertainty of exit timelines and potential returns, as early-stage startups can take years to mature or may not succeed at all.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an angel investor in startups, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Angel Investor in startups, you need strong financial acumen, due diligence capabilities, and a solid understanding of startup business models, often backed by experience in entrepreneurship or finance. Familiarity with financial modeling tools, cap table management software, and legal documentation platforms is important. Exceptional networking, negotiation skills, and the ability to mentor founders make an angel investor stand out. These skills enable effective evaluation, guidance, and support of startups, increasing the likelihood of successful investments and growth.

About The Investor Role

The Investor position at Samsung Next is a three-year role that provides individuals with an opportunity to establish and/or expand a career as a venture investor with the backing of Samsung, one of the world’s best consumer technology brands. No prior investing experience is required. Individuals learn the fundamentals of investing over a three-year program. This role is not targeted for seasoned investors.

Investors work directly with experienced Managing Directors to develop and augment their venture investment skills and are given as much responsibility as quickly as they can manage. Investors are exposed to a large quantity of deals. As such, a professional background and network in the AI tech stack gained through academic research or industry experience at a large corporation or startup is key. In addition, a strong intellectual prowess to distill the latest technical papers will be useful as our investments can be highly technical and early stage.

This is a hybrid position requiring regular in-office days. Additionally, due to the global nature of our work, weekly evening and/or early morning meetings are required. Occasional travel will be required as well.

Responsibilities
  • Source investment opportunities. This will first and foremost involve growing, establishing and leveraging strong relationships with founders and investors in our key focus areas of AI, robotics, edge infrastructure, blockchain, healthtech, mediatech, and fintech.
  • Evaluate early‑stage investment opportunities with thorough due diligence on technology, team, market, and product.
  • Communicate investment cases effectively from deal discussion through deal closure.
  • Contribute to learnings and insights by developing a sharp and informed point of view communicated through written investment memos and active participation in deal discussion.
  • Provide a supportive and responsive experience to the founders and builders we work with.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate or an advanced degree in computer science, or engineering related field
  • Highly successful 3+ years of full time technical experience from industry or startups, or equivalent experience if this has been gained parallel to your research for an advanced technical degree
  • Strong domain knowledge of an area of tech focus for Samsung Next – specifically seeking AI, Robotics, Edge/Cloud Infrastructure expertise
  • Genuinely intellectually curious and passion for technology and startups
  • Thrives at playing many positions in an unstructured environment
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong relationships, particularly in the startup ecosystem
  • Displays high EQ and is a team oriented contributor
  • Outstanding analytical and communication skills – able to simplify the complex, synthesize information and provide pointed insights
  • Available to travel regularly
  • Previous angel or personal investing background a plus
  • Experience navigating in a large corporate organization is a plus
