How much do analog mixed signal design jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for analog mixed signal design in the United States is $186,238.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $202,000.00 and $202,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by analog mixed signal design engineers in their daily work?

Analog Mixed Signal Design engineers often encounter challenges such as managing noise and signal integrity while integrating analog and digital components on a single chip. Balancing power consumption, area, and performance while meeting stringent specifications can be demanding. Additionally, these engineers frequently collaborate with layout, verification, and system teams to ensure seamless functionality, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. Staying updated with evolving design tools and process technologies is also essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Analog Mixed Signal Design vs Digital IC Design?

AspectAnalog Mixed Signal DesignDigital IC Design
FocusDesign of circuits that handle both analog and digital signalsDesign of digital logic circuits and systems
SkillsAnalog circuit analysis, SPICE simulation, noise analysisHardware description languages (VHDL/Verilog), digital logic
Work EnvironmentSemiconductor companies, R&D labs, mixed-signal chip fabricationASIC/FPGA design firms, digital hardware development
CertificationsEE degrees, analog/mixed-signal design certificationsEE degrees, digital design certifications

Analog Mixed Signal Design focuses on creating circuits that process both analog and digital signals, requiring expertise in analog circuitry and mixed-signal simulation. Digital IC Design concentrates on digital logic and system architecture, emphasizing hardware description languages and digital logic principles. Both roles are vital in semiconductor industries but differ in their technical focus and skill sets.

What is analog mixed signal design?

Analog Mixed Signal Design refers to the process of creating integrated circuits (ICs) that handle both analog and digital signals within a single chip. These designs are essential in modern electronics, bridging the gap between real-world analog inputs (like sound, temperature, or radio signals) and digital processing. Engineers in this field work on circuits such as analog-to-digital converters (ADC), digital-to-analog converters (DAC), amplifiers, and filters. Their expertise is crucial in devices like smartphones, medical equipment, and automotive electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an analog mixed signal design engineer?

To excel as an Analog Mixed Signal Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, circuit theory, and semiconductor physics, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with EDA tools such as Cadence, SPICE simulation, and experience with lab measurement equipment are essential, along with knowledge of industry standards. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, high-performance integrated circuits that meet complex technical specifications and industry demands.

Job description

Director, Analog/Mixed Signal Design

Location: San Jose, CA (on-site)
Ayar Labs is shattering AI data bottlenecks by moving data at the speed of light. As pioneers of co-packaged optics (CPO), we are using light instead of electricity to move data faster, further, and with a fraction of the energy needed to fuel the explosive growth of AI models.
Backed by industry giants like NVIDIA, AMD and Intel and manufactured in partnership with the world’s leading semiconductor ecosystem, Ayar Labs’ co-packaged optics solution is key to unleashing next-generation AI scale-up architectures.
We are hiring a Director of Analog/Mixed Signal Design to lead the team responsible for the advanced circuits at the heart of our optical I/O products. You will own the analog/mixed-signal design strategy and execution for high-bandwidth optical links, including high-speed transmit and receive signal paths, clocking, data conversion, biasing, and power-management circuits. You will set clear technical direction, maintain a rigorous design methodology, and remove execution barriers, ensuring that the team delivers production-quality silicon on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
  • Drive architectural decisions for the high-speed optical PHY of our next-generation product: TX path, RX path, clocking, and mixed-signal control loops against a system-level link budget shared with the photonics and laser teams.
  • Drive co-design efforts across the EIC/PIC boundary.
  • Lead the silicon-success methodology: first-silicon-success expectations, debug discipline, characterization-to-production.
  • Mentor AMS design engineers in design reviews and silicon debug.
  • Represent the AMS organization in cross-functional architecture reviews, customer technical engagements, and foundry/EDA partner discussions.
  • Manage and scale the design team to develop IP intercepting multiple parallel products.

Basic Qualifications
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering
  • 12+ years of industry experience in analog/mixed signal design
  • Track record of production tapeouts in advanced FinFET CMOS nodes
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver complex analog/mixed-signal IP across multiple concurrent programs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. or Ph.D in Electrical Engineering
Annual Salary Range: $240,000 - $300,000
NOTE TO RECRUITERS:
Principals only. We are not accepting resumes from recruiters for this position. Remuneration for recruiting activities is only applicable subject to a signed and executed agreement between the parties. Please don’t send candidates to Ayar Labs, and do not contact our managers.
