Position Overview:

This Job Description encompasses the skills and responsibilities of individuals certified by both the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP).

This combined Job Description highlights the fundamental responsibilities of individuals holding certifications from both NCCER and AMPP. Specific duties may vary depending on the particular certifications obtained and the industry or project requirements.

General Responsibilities

  • Adherence to safety standards and regulations, specifically OSHA standards.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying updated on industry advancements.
  • Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with team members and stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving skills to address challenges and implement solutions effectively.
  • Teamwork skills for working effectively with other professionals.

NCCER-Specific Responsibilities (focused on insulation, pipefitting, sheet metal, etc.)

  • Proficiency in various industrial crafts (e.g. insulation, pipefitting, sheet metal, electrical, welding, rigging, etc.) based on specific NCCER certifications obtained.
  • Understanding and application of basic safety principles and practices in an industrial setting.
  • Knowledge and effective use of hand tools and power tools (e.g. measuring tools, handsaws, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Competency in basic rigging and materials handling.
  • Practical application of construction math principles.

AMPP-Specific Responsibilities (focused on corrosion control and protective coatings)

  • Expert knowledge of AMPP standards and procedures related to protective coatings and corrosion control.
  • Performing coatings inspections to assess the integrity and quality of protective coatings.
  • Ensuring safe working conditions during coatings application and inspection processes.
  • Completing and submitting detailed inspection reports.
  • Function testing equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Overseeing operations to ensure compliance with AMPP standards.
  • Accessing and evaluating internal and external coatings.
  • Monitoring coating applications to ensure proper adherence to specifications.
  • Collaboration with contractors, project managers, and stakeholders to communicate concerns and ensure work team qualifications.
  • Potentially specializing in areas like creating paint maintenance programs, conducting site surveys, and understanding appropriate safety, environmental, and health issues in the protective coatings field.


Required Skills and Experience:


  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience working with one or more of the following NCCER and/or AMPP services: Installation, repair and removal of insulation, sheet metal, high-and low-pressure piping systems, corrosion monitoring, coatings inspection and coating applications, etc.)
  • Minimum of one or more of the following certifications: NCCER and/or AMPP
  • Certifications in NDT methods (MT/PT/UTT/RT) would be considered an asset.
  • Valid Driver's License and pre-access drug and alcohol testing required.
  • Pre-employment background checks will be required.
  • Valid TWIC Card or the knowledge of PIN to TWIC Card may be required for some sites/locations.
  • Travel may be required for some sites/locations sometimes with little notice.


Work Conditions:


  • Field duties require indoor and outdoor work in diverse industrial environments with varying climate conditions
  • Interaction with other crew employees, as well as supervisors, client personnel and a wide range of stakeholders
  • Working in a plant and/or shop area around production machinery with extreme noise levels
  • Work from various levels of heights and/or confined spaces for long periods of time
  • Wear safety equipment as required by the safety department for personal protection (PPE)


Physical and Mental Requirements:


  • Ability to lift, move, and carry objects weighing 75lbs. or greater
  • Must be able to walk, sit, stand, bend, reach, and climb
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights, including climbing tanks, ladders, scaffolding, towers, piping systems, catwalks, structural steel, and wind turbines
  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking and stooping
  • Working extended hours and standing for extended periods of time
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments in conditions of extreme heat and/or cold
