Job description

Gallery Teachers work with the Manager of Gallery Teaching Programs, and the Gallery Teacher Specialist to develop and facilitate experiences for PreK-12th-grade students onsite at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and offsite at partner schools, and supports educational experiences as part of the education team at the Carter.

Responsibilities

In coordination with and as directed by the Manager of Gallery Teaching Programs, Bilingual Gallery Teachers will:

  • Contribute to the development of and facilitate tours of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art for students from district-wide PreK-12th-grade programs, individual schools, homeschool programs, and day care groups.
  • Contribute to the development of and facilitate offsite student-oriented programs at partnership schools, including pre-visits, and fine arts events.
  • Translate text from English to Spanish for all tour content created for student tours.
  • Facilitate tours in Spanish for various grade levels from PreK to high school, including Spanish Advanced Placement classes.
  • Attend all education sessions to learn about the objects in the collection and special exhibitions and participate in specialized professional development related to teaching techniques and strategies.
  • Stay informed of school curriculum, state standards, technology, and art materials relevant to museum experiences.
  • Help facilitate both family and access programs, on an ongoing, regular basis.
  • Participate in and help facilitate large scale education events, both on- and offsite, and institutional events as part of the Carter education team.
  • Help facilitate professional development for educators on a regular, ongoing basis.
  • Be an ambassador for the museum, and promote museum programs and exhibitions to teachers, students, and museum visitors.
  • Communicate pertinent tour information to frontline staff (security personnel, Visitor Experience staff, Museum Shop staff, etc.).
  • Conduct unscheduled and last-minute student tours upon request.
  • Routinely check email to stay informed about museum and school program news.
  • Maintain confidentiality of museum information; other duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements

  • Spanish language fluency and biliteracy required.
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of various learning styles and strategies to engage students of all ages, knowledge of current educational practices, experience using ESL teaching strategies, and experience with developing museum and classroom curricula.
  • Computer literate; experience with Windows and MS Office.
  • The majority of this job function and responsibilities occur onsite, with the exception of Carter teaching and events held offsite.

Qualifications/Education

  • BA degree in art education, museum education, fine arts, art history, American history or studies, or another related field; knowledge of American art preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience as a museum docent or gallery teacher and/or teaching students in a classroom or informal learning environment.
