What is an AMI technician?

AMI Technicians, or Advanced Metering Infrastructure Technicians, are professionals responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting smart meters and related communication systems used by utility companies. They ensure that automated meter reading systems are functioning properly, enabling efficient data collection for electricity, water, or gas usage. AMI Technicians also diagnose network issues, perform repairs, and sometimes provide technical support to customers or field teams. Their work is essential for utilities that use smart grid technology to improve energy management and customer service.

What does an AMI technician do?

An AMI Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems, which involve smart meters and related communication networks. On a typical day, you may perform field installations, respond to service calls, conduct system diagnostics, and ensure data accuracy for utility billing. Collaboration is key; you'll often work with engineers, IT specialists, and customer service teams to resolve technical issues and support seamless meter data collection. This role requires both independent fieldwork and close coordination with cross-functional teams to maintain reliable service for utility customers.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an AMI technician?
