Amd Engineering information

What is an AMD engineer?

AMD Engineers are professionals who work for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), a leading semiconductor company. They design, develop, and test microprocessors, graphics cards, and other computing technologies. Their work involves hardware and software engineering, collaborating on product innovation, and optimizing performance for consumer and enterprise devices. AMD Engineers may specialize in areas like chip design, embedded systems, or software development, contributing to advancements in high-performance computing and graphics solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AMD engineer?

To thrive as an AMD Engineer, you need a strong background in computer engineering, microarchitecture, and hardware design, generally supported by a relevant degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with hardware description languages (HDLs) like Verilog or VHDL, simulation tools, and industry certifications such as those in system-on-chip (SoC) design are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the development of efficient, innovative processors and enable effective collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by engineers working at AMD, and how can new hires best prepare for them?

Engineers at AMD often work on cutting-edge semiconductor technologies, which means they must quickly adapt to fast-paced development cycles and complex problem-solving scenarios. New hires may find the integration of hardware and software, rapid innovation, and collaboration across global teams particularly challenging. To prepare, it's beneficial to strengthen both your technical knowledge and soft skills, such as communication and adaptability, and to stay current with industry trends. Proactively seeking mentorship and engaging in cross-functional teamwork can also help ease the transition and foster professional growth.

What is the difference between Amd Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectAmd EngineeringMechanical Engineering

Industry UsageUsed in electronics, hardware, and systems designUsed across industries like automotive, aerospace, energy

While Amd Engineering focuses on designing and developing electronic and hardware systems, Mechanical Engineering covers a broader range of physical systems and machinery. Both roles require engineering degrees and share similar work environments, but their technical focus and industry applications differ significantly.

Is AMD engineering a good career path?

AMD engineering involves designing and developing semiconductor products, such as processors and graphics cards, requiring skills in electrical engineering, computer architecture, and software development. It offers opportunities in a fast-growing industry with competitive salaries, but it can also involve high-pressure projects and continuous learning to stay current with technological advancements.

What do AMD engineers do?

AMD engineers design, develop, and test computer hardware components such as processors, graphics cards, and related technologies. They work with engineering tools, programming languages, and industry standards to improve performance, efficiency, and reliability of AMD products. Their roles often involve collaboration across teams and may require knowledge of hardware design, firmware, and testing procedures.

Job description

Embedded Software Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on the architecture, design, development, integration, verification, and sustainment of complex embedded software solutions for advanced electro-optical, infrared, imaging, display, and sensor-based systems. The Embedded Software Engineer acts as a technical leader, owning significant software subsystems from concept through deployment while guiding junior and mid-level engineers. The position supports mission-critical military and defense applications involving cameras, displays, embedded processors, real-time operating systems, and system-on-chip technologies. This is a hands-on role suited for an engineer with strong Embedded C/C++ skills, experience with FreeRTOS or Embedded Linux, and familiarity with AMD/Xilinx processing platforms who can lead development efforts in a highly technical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, integration, testing, and sustainment of complex embedded software components and subsystems.
  • Own software architecture, key design decisions, implementation strategies, and technical execution for assigned products, features, or subsystems.
  • Develop embedded software for AMD/Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC, MicroBlaze, and other SoC-based processor platforms.
  • Design and implement software for Bare Metal, FreeRTOS, and Embedded Linux/Ubuntu environments.
  • Develop and debug low-level drivers, middleware, communication protocols, and application-level software.
  • Integrate embedded software with FPGA, hardware, sensor, display, and imaging subsystems.
  • Lead hardware/software integration activities, including board bring-up, system-level debugging, and root-cause analysis.
  • Develop and troubleshoot communication interfaces such as I2C, SPI, UART, RS-232, GPIO, Ethernet, TCP/IP, and lwIP Ethernet stacks.
  • Support camera, display, image processing, electro-optical/infrared, and sensor-based embedded systems.
  • Create and maintain software requirements, architecture documentation, design specifications, verification plans, and test procedures.
  • Conduct code reviews and provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior and mid-level embedded software engineers.
  • Collaborate closely with systems, hardware, FPGA, verification, manufacturing, and program management teams to meet technical, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Support technical planning activities, including risk identification, effort estimation, and schedule development.
  • Participate in technical reviews, design reviews, customer demonstrations, and cross-functional engineering discussions.
  • Utilize development and collaboration tools such as GitLab, Jira, Confluence, AMD Vitis, Linux, and Ubuntu to support software development and team coordination.

Essential Skills
