Ambulance Coding professionals are responsible for reviewing ambulance run sheets, translating medical procedures and diagnoses into standardized codes, and ensuring documentation meets both regulatory and insurance requirements. You’ll often communicate with EMS staff to clarify records, address any inconsistencies, and ensure all billable services are captured accurately. Your day may also include preparing claims for billing, resolving denied claims, and regularly updating your knowledge to stay compliant with changing coding regulations. This role plays a key part in the revenue cycle for ambulance services, making attention to detail and collaboration with other departments critical for success.
An Ambulance Coding job involves assigning standardized medical codes to ambulance transport services for billing and insurance purposes. Coders review patient care reports, apply appropriate CPT, HCPCS, and ICD codes, and ensure claims comply with regulations. Licensure: EMT license for the state where employed, valid drivers license.
Experience: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age to operate Mercy EMS vehicles.
Certifications/Registration: Hazmat Awareness, BLS for Healthcare Providers, NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 within 90 days of hire.
Other: May be required to work differing shifts and schedules.
Working Conditions, Mental and Physical Requirements: Unimpaired mobility: Must be able to respond quickly to ambulance, must be able to access patients n difficult terrain, must beable to climb stairs, must be able to work in close anddangerous environments such as damaged vehicles, must be able with partner to carry equipment and patients. Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving of equipment and patients in a variety of environmental conditions. Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques. Must have correctable vision acceptable for day and nightoperation of emergency vehicles, must have color acuity adequate for determining of skin and blood color, and must be able to read medication dosages on drug labels and syringes. Must be able to hear and understandinformation provided by patients, family or bystanders; must be able to hear breathing sounds and accurately determine auscultated blood pressure; must be able to differentiate separate conversations in active, distracting environments; must be able to hear and understand radio traffic when responding with lights and sirens. Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others in loud conditions, must be able to speak clearly in stressful situations, must be able to verbally communicate with patients, families and other emergency services personnel. Incumbents will be required successfully satisfy the physical demands of the role. This will include a pre-hire and annual fitness for duty test.
Equipment Used: Mobile and portable communications equipment, Monitor/Defibrillator/Pacer, approved stretcher, stair chair, backboard, scoop type device, variety of bags and kits, assigned ambulance, computer, FAX, printer and other office related equipment.
Preferred Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Preferred Certification/Registration: ITLS or equivalent training.
