Altitude Development information

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in altitude development projects, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in altitude development often encounter challenges such as adapting construction techniques to extreme weather conditions, managing logistics in remote or rugged terrain, and ensuring the safety and well-being of workers in low-oxygen environments. These challenges can be addressed through careful project planning, investment in specialized equipment, and implementing robust health and safety protocols. Additionally, close collaboration with local experts and continuous training for team members are crucial for overcoming the unique obstacles presented by high-altitude development projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an Altitude Development role, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Altitude Development role, you generally need expertise in aerospace engineering, atmospheric science, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant engineering or science degree. Familiarity with simulation software, altitude chamber systems, and certification in aerospace safety protocols is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in this highly technical environment. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient development, testing, and optimization of systems operating at high altitudes.

What is altitude development?

Altitude development refers to the process of preparing individuals, athletes, or teams to perform at high altitudes, typically above 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) where oxygen levels are lower. This can involve specialized training programs, acclimatization strategies, and physiological adaptations to improve performance and reduce altitude sickness. The field is relevant in sports, military training, aviation, and outdoor expeditions, focusing on how the body adapts to reduced oxygen availability. Techniques may include live high–train low strategies, hypoxic training, and nutritional adjustments. Altitude development specialists help optimize physical and mental performance in challenging environments.

Founded and overseen by restaurateur David Morton of the Morton’s Steakhouse family, Episcope has a legendary culture marked by creativity, passion, quality, and love. The company currently operates in Chicago, New York, Houston, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Northern VA. Episcope offers a unique laboratory environment that encourages learning, ongoing development, and close collaboration with some of the top minds in business, food, beverage, and design. Episcope is now looking for an experienced, passionate Director of Sales to lead event and catering sales across its Crystal City venues. If you have successfully overseen sales and operations at a multimillion-dollar, full-service restaurant or events operation; share our passion for food, music, and design; and can deliver contagious hospitality to guests and staff alike, then we encourage your application submission.
Overview:
The Director of Sales is a key leadership role responsible for driving all private event and catering sales across our Crystal City venues, including Constellation, Altitude, Daydrift, and Water Bar. This position manages client relationships from prospecting through post-event follow-up, leads a team of event managers and coordinators, and works cross-functionally with the culinary, operations, and marketing teams to achieve aggressive revenue goals.
The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, brings a collaborative leadership style, and has a proven ability to build both internal culture and external partnerships. A deep understanding of corporate, social, and catering sales is essential, as is a passion for hospitality excellence at scale.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead all sales initiatives, prospecting, and client relationship management for Constellation, Altitude, Daydrift, and Water Bar.
  • Oversee the full sales pipeline, from lead generation through contract execution and post-event client care.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing team of event managers and coordinators, providing mentorship, coaching, and clear performance targets.
  • Recruit, train, and retain top event sales talent, fostering a culture of accountability and building a bench of future leaders within the organization.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with corporate tenants, agencies, and event planners to maximize event revenue opportunities.
  • Drive sales reporting, forecasting, and budgeting to meet and exceed quarterly and annual revenue goals.
  • Conduct client site visits, presentations, and tastings to secure new business.
  • Collaborate with culinary, operations, and marketing teams to continually refine offerings, menus, and event packages.
  • Oversee and improve sales processes, CRM usage, and guest feedback systems to ensure exceptional client experiences.
  • Maintain active, visible leadership presence onsite during key events, working alongside the event operations team to ensure service excellence.
  • Act as a brand ambassador for Episcope Hospitality, promoting the company’s culture, standards, and values to all clients and team members.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in restaurant and event management, including private dining, catering, receptions, and large-scale event sales.
  • Proven track record of exceeding multimillion-dollar sales targets.
  • Experience managing and mentoring a team of event managers, coordinators, and sales professionals.
  • Strong network within the DC metro / Northern VA corporate, social, and event planning sectors is a major plus.
  • Deep understanding of restaurant operations, fine dining protocols, and event sales best practices.
  • Proficiency in Tripleseat, SevenRooms, Toast, OpenTable, and Microsoft platforms.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work across departments to drive operational and experiential excellence.
  • Highly organized, goal-driven, and capable of managing multiple high-priority initiatives at once.
Compensation & Benefits:
  • Base salary + competitive commission structure based on event sales performance.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Employee dining discounts across all Episcope Hospitality locations.
  • Opportunity to grow into a regional or national sales leadership role within a fast-growing hospitality company.
Required Skills:

  • Leadership & Staff Development
  • CRM & Event Management Software (Tripleseat, Toast, SevenRooms, OpenTable)
  • Budgeting, Forecasting & Reporting
  • Relationship Building & Networking
