Additionally, AROs must balance administrative duties with providing support and guidance to program participants, making adaptability and attention to detail essential for success in this role.

What is an alternate responsible officer?

An Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) is an individual designated by a sponsor organization, usually in the context of U.S. Department of State Exchange Visitor (J-1 visa) programs, to assist or act in place of the primary Responsible Officer (RO). The ARO has the authority to access the SEVIS system, issue and sign DS-2019 forms, and help ensure the program complies with federal regulations. AROs play a crucial role in managing participant records, providing guidance to exchange visitors, and maintaining program integrity. They serve as an additional point of contact for participants and authorities when the primary RO is unavailable.
