Alterations Intern information

What is an alterations intern?

Alterations Interns are entry-level assistants who work under the supervision of experienced tailors or seamstresses to learn the skills needed for garment alterations. Their responsibilities typically include tasks like hemming, taking measurements, pinning garments, and assisting with fittings. This role provides hands-on experience in sewing techniques and fabric handling, which is valuable for a future career in fashion or tailoring. Interns also gain insight into customer service and the workflow of an alterations department.

What types of projects and tasks can an alterations intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Alterations Intern, you will typically assist with a variety of garment modifications, such as hemming, taking in or letting out seams, and adjusting closures under the supervision of experienced tailors. You may also help with fittings, fabric preparation, and keeping the workspace organized. Interns often have the opportunity to observe client consultations and learn how to assess garments for proper fit. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into professional alteration workflows and helps you build technical sewing skills essential for career growth in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an alterations intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Alterations Intern, you need foundational sewing skills, basic garment construction knowledge, and familiarity with textiles, often supported by coursework in fashion design or a related field. Experience with sewing machines, sergers, and tools like measuring tapes and fabric shears is typically required. Attention to detail, patience, and strong communication help you understand client needs and deliver precise alterations. These skills are essential to ensure quality workmanship, customer satisfaction, and effective teamwork in a fast-paced tailoring or fashion environment.
