Job description

Senior AI Software Engineer – Alpha Lab

Empower LTC Pharmacies. Save Lives. Build the Future of Healthcare Technology.

About Softwriters

Softwriters develops innovative IT solutions that empower long‑term care (LTC) pharmacies to deliver life‑saving medications more efficiently and accurately. As a voted top workplace in Pittsburgh, we combine meaningful work with a collaborative culture where your contributions directly impact patient care.

As a market leader in long‑term care pharmacy technology, we continue to invest in teams that explore new ideas quickly—while maintaining the rigor required in a highly regulated healthcare environment. Our people and culture are our differentiator, and our mission is at the center of everything we build.

Location: Hybrid – Pittsburgh, PA (Core office days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Reports to: Director, Product Operations and Execution

The Opportunity

This isn't a role where AI is just a buzzword on a roadmap — it's central to what we're building. Alpha Lab is our innovation engine: a focused team responsible for rapidly designing, prototyping, and validating the next generation of product capabilities. You'll be one of the engineers shaping how we build AI here — influencing architecture decisions, setting engineering standards, and turning early-stage ideas into working software that reaches real users.

Our products span cloud-hosted services, on‑prem applications, mobile platforms, and hybrid data environments, which means the design space is wide and the problems are genuinely varied.

If you've shipped production software, have experience applying AI to real workflows, and thrive in environments where the problem isn't fully defined yet — this role was built for you. You'll help take ideas from early concept through to validated, shippable handoff, partnering closely with Core Engineering as successful experiments transition forward.

What You'll Own

  • Design, build, and iterate on AI‑enabled product experiences — including LLM integrations, multi‑step agentic workflows, and on‑device AI capabilities — built with the engineering rigor and production thinking needed for real‑world deployment
  • Implement application‑layer patterns for AI features: orchestration, tool use, context handling, fallbacks, and latency optimization — the hard parts that make AI reliable in real workflows
  • Rapidly prototype new product concepts, translating ambiguous hypotheses into working software with measurable outcomes
  • Evaluate AI feature readiness across quality, reliability, cost, latency, and operational supportability — and advocate clearly for what's ready to move forward
  • Build with compliance in mind from day one: privacy, auditability, and data handling are foundational in a regulated healthcare environment
  • Drive engineering quality through clean, well‑tested code, thoughtful refactoring, and strong design and architecture reviews
  • Mentor teammates through code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions — raising the bar for the entire team
  • Stay current on emerging AI and application engineering techniques and bring relevant learnings back to Alpha Lab

What You'll Bring

The experience that matters most:

  • A track record of delivering and supporting production software at scale — the kind of experience that tells you what breaks, why, and how to prevent it (typically 7+ years)
  • We welcome candidates across experience levels who bring strong engineering fundamentals and relevant hands‑on experience. Final title, scope, and level will be aligned to an individual's skills, experience, and demonstrated impact.
  • Hands‑on experience implementing AI‑enabled features in real workflows, including practical ownership of reliability, guardrails, failure modes, monitoring, latency, and cost
  • Deep familiarity with at least one of the following ecosystems:
    • .NET / C#
    • JavaScript / TypeScript (React, Angular, Node.js)
    • Mobile (iOS, Android, React Native)
  • Experience delivering software in regulated environments — healthcare, finance, defense, or similar — where security, privacy, and auditability are non‑negotiable
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals: you write maintainable, testable, high‑quality code as a matter of habit
  • Comfort working independently and collaboratively in fast‑moving, iterative environments where priorities evolve and ambiguity is the norm
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience

Even Better If You Have

  • Experience with AI implementation techniques such as LLM integrations (Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Bedrock), RAG and vector search, or agentic workflow orchestration
  • Background in pharmacy, long‑term care, or adjacent healthcare domains
  • Experience with on‑device or edge‑capable applications (mobile, embedded, offline‑first environments)
  • Cloud‑native development experience, particularly on Azure — including containerized services and serverless architectures
  • Familiarity with regulated‑friendly design patterns: least privilege, encryption in transit and at rest, audit logging, and data minimization
  • Experience implementing observability practices: structured logging, metrics, tracing, and dashboards
  • Time spent in an innovation lab, R&D team, or incubator environment where success is measured by validated learning and rapid delivery

Why Alpha Lab

Most engineering roles ask you to execute on a defined spec. Alpha Lab asks you to help define what gets built — and then build it. You'll work at the intersection of modern AI capabilities and real‑world healthcare constraints, where the problems are genuinely hard, the work matters, and the learning curve never flattens.

We're early in building this team, which means the decisions you make now will shape how we work for years to come.

Your work directly impacts patient safety and the future of pharmacy technology across the healthcare system.
