What is an algorithm?

An Algorithm job typically involves designing, analyzing, and optimizing algorithms to solve complex problems efficiently. Professionals in this role work in fields like computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, and software development. They create algorithms for tasks such as data processing, machine learning, search optimization, and automation. Strong mathematical and programming skills are essential, along with knowledge of algorithmic complexity and data structures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the algorithm position, and why are they important?

To excel as an Algorithm Engineer, you typically need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and programming languages such as Python, C++, or Java, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with algorithms and data structures, version control systems like Git, and experience with technical tools such as MATLAB or TensorFlow are highly valued. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are crucial soft skills for this position. These competencies are essential to create efficient algorithms, collaborate across teams, and drive innovation in computational solutions.

What are typical projects or tasks that an algorithm engineer works on?

As an Algorithm Engineer, you might work on developing and optimizing algorithms for tasks like data analysis, machine learning, computer vision, or operations research, depending on the industry. Daily responsibilities often include writing and testing code, analyzing performance bottlenecks, and collaborating with data scientists, product managers, or software engineers to integrate algorithms into production systems. You may also be involved in researching new techniques, reviewing technical literature, and presenting your findings to technical and non-technical audiences. This role often requires balancing creative problem-solving with practical implementation and continuous improvement.

Job description

Algorithm Engineer

Apogee Research is at the forefront of a revolution in how the DoD operates: a turn towards compositional systems of systems instead of traditional monolithic architectures. This change is driven by a need for faster adaptation to adversarial environments, which requires the ability to field resilient, distributed systems in days to weeks rather than months to years. To create composable systems that operate resiliently at scale in contested and resource constrained environments, we combine custom software toolchains with feedback control to dynamically adjust to ever changing environments.

We currently have openings for algorithm engineers to design, implement, and validate new algorithms across multiple domains including networking, distributed data fusion and resource management, distributed electronic warfare, and distributed Command and Control (C2). Understanding of probability and statistics is required, experience with control systems is desired. Demonstrated understanding of how to characterize the open-loop and close-loop stability of nonlinear systems via analysis, simulation, and experimentation is a strong plus.

Qualified candidates should have a mix of academic theory and real-world applications of relevant algorithms, combined with a track record of applying research techniques to real-world problems. This is not an entry level position and real-world experience is required. While this role is not primarily a software development role, some software development experience is strongly preferred.

The position is located in our Arlington, VA office. Existing DoD Top Secret clearance is strongly preferred, otherwise all candidates must be eligible to obtain one and therefore all candidates must be a US citizen to apply.

About Apogee Research

Apogee Research offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, FSAs, paid vacation, sick leave, and paid holidays. Conveniently located in Arlington, VA, we are a short walking distance from the Ballston Metro station. We offer the choice of paid garage parking or a contribution towards a transit account.

Apogee Research, LLC is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer.
