What does an Algorithm Engineer do?

An Algorithm Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes algorithms to solve complex computational problems. They analyze data, improve system performance, and implement mathematical models for various applications, such as machine learning, computer vision, and optimization. This role requires proficiency in programming languages like Python or C++, strong mathematical skills, and an understanding of data structures and algorithms. Algorithm Engineers work closely with software developers, data scientists, and researchers to integrate efficient solutions into real-world systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Algorithm Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Algorithm Engineer, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and programming, usually demonstrated with a degree in these fields and experience in algorithm design and analysis. Familiarity with languages like Python, C++, or Java, and tools such as MATLAB or TensorFlow, as well as relevant certifications like those in data science or machine learning, are typically advantageous. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and effective communication are critical soft skills for success in this role. These competencies are crucial because they enable Algorithm Engineers to design efficient, innovative solutions and collaborate seamlessly with multidisciplinary teams.

What are the typical challenges an Algorithm Engineer faces in their day-to-day work?

Algorithm Engineers often encounter complex problems that require creative, efficient solutions within strict performance or resource constraints. They may need to optimize existing algorithms, develop new ones from scratch, and ensure seamless integration into larger software systems, often while balancing accuracy, speed, and scalability. Collaborating with other engineers, data scientists, and product teams to align technical efforts with business goals is also a regular part of the job. Staying updated with the latest advancements in algorithms and technology is essential, making continuous learning a key aspect of the role.

Job description

About the Team

STR's Intelligence Division researches and develops advanced analytics and machine learning-based solutions to solve challenging problems related to national security. Our team consists of passionate and motivated engineers with advanced degrees in engineering, computer science, mathematics, and data science, who are seeking opportunities to use their deep technical knowledge and creativity to tackle some of the hardest problems that our customers face. Our projects span multiple different data modalities and incorporate advanced algorithms, deep learning, and statistical techniques to uncover patterns in social media, structured and unstructured text, time series, geospatial, and imagery data, and must operate under challenging constraints not typically found in the commercial world. The tools and technologies we develop have real world impact and US Government analysts use them to extract and enrich intelligence information around the globe.

The Role:

As a Senior Software Engineer / Back-End Developer, you will join a cross-functional team tasked with implementing software solutions to challenging, high-impact problems. You will create infrastructure to process, store, and expose large and varied datasets that include imagery, structured and unstructured text, geospatial data, and more. You will work alongside algorithm developers and end users to deploy advanced analytic components on various compute platforms, including both on-prem and cloud environments. You will build, demonstrate, and transition systems to partner organizations. Positions are available in both Woburn, MA and Arlington, VA. Due to the nature of our work, applicants should expect to primarily work onsite.

Who you are:

  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance with Top Secret Eligibility, for which US citizenship is needed by the US government
  • Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or other engineering or scientific field
  • 5+ years of experience in developing, deploying, or maintaining enterprise software solutions
  • Knowledge of Mobile Operating System (iOS/Android) and mobile based applications
  • Expertise in object-oriented programming languages, Linux command line tools, and shell scripting
  • Experience in designing/developing platform components, such as caching, messaging, event processing, automation, transformation, and tooling frameworks
  • Strong problem solving, debugging, and analytical skills

Even Better

  • Active Top Secret, or TS/SCI security clearance
  • Software team leadership experience, especially for distributed cross-functional teams
  • Experience deploying ETL processes and/or machine learning models into production
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms, such as AWS
  • Programming skills in CUDA
  • Familiarity with statistical and/or machine learning models
  • Understanding of telecommunication networks
