Job Description
Under limited supervision, serves as the primary research leader for the Prairie View Algae Center of Excellence (PACE) and Center of Smart Agriculture Solutions (CSAS), conducts and coordinates independent research and capacity building programs, and activities of PACE and CSAS, and develops and implements ongoing research and workforce training in collaboration with other algae-focused RD&D led by other scientists at PVAMU and external to PVAMU. Salary will be competitive and dependent on experience and demonstrated accomplishments.
This position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.
Responsibilities:
  • Provides leadership, general oversight, and management of PACE and CSAS and serves as the primary point of contact. Seeks and secures extramural funding that supports algae research and climate smart solutions and enhances student experiential learning, publishes research results in peer-reviewed journals, and maintains academic and professional visibility regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Develops and provides leadership and support for PACE and CSAS within the Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC). Observes University and CAFNR administrative policies to ensure full research compliance. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership at CAFNR.
  • Leads in the development and coordination of an independent research program in algae cultivation, harvesting, processing, and storage in addition to algae as a feed, food, fuel, fertilizer, biodegradable monomers, industrial molecules, and ecosystem services e.g., wastewater treatment.
  • Leads coordination of lecturers and practical laboratories as part of the Applied Algal Agronomy class offered by CAFNR.
  • Identifies and initiates research collaborations with scientists at PVAMU and external to PVAMU, and develops technologies that advance knowledge of the use of algae and other climate smart commodities for sustainable feed, fuel or other downstream uses.
  • Develops scalable and replicable systems for algae cultivation and use to enhance economic opportunities for limited-resource farmers in Texas and other CAFNR clientele.
  • Participates in CAFNR outreach programs, including field day, educational programs, youth algae science projects, and the Houston area events, also prepares extension publications to reach audiences who can benefit from ongoing research, and distributes surveys to students and faculty.
  • Participates and assists in college-wide events, activities, and committees and performs other duties as deemed necessary.

Required Education & Experience:
  • Ph.D. degree in Agriculture Technology or Biological Science and/or related science.
  • Six (6) years of related experience.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and demonstrated success in securing external grants for research projects.
  • Prior leadership experience in algal research, development, cultivation, yields, biomass analysis, and downstream biomass utilization is preferred.
  • Six (6) years of workforce development, education, and training experience including curricula development, training program supervision and organization. Demonstrated success in obtaining workforce development and education grants. An effective teacher and mentor to young professionals and students.
  • Six (6) years managerial experience including but not limited to: Center of Excellence, Corporation, Industrial, or Research Center.
