JOB TITLE: Parks Maintenance Worker III DEPARTMENT: Operations PAY RANGE: 16/1 - $18.13/hour EXEMPT: No SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes ACCOUNTABLE TO: Parks Supervisor REVISED: 11-21-2024
This classification is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations and/or the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act. As a safety-sensitive classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana certification will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under direction of the Park Maintenance Supervisor, performs and oversees projects and daily work schedules of the Parks Maintenance Division. Work varies, requiring independent judgment in the oversight and coordination of the Division activities within established policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Leads daily crew through an assigned work schedule and daily assignments. Ensures job duties are completed fully and in a timely manner.
  • Complete daily inspections, work orders, and service requests by using department software.
  • Works to ensure a clean, safe working shop area for crew members.
  • Responsible for training crew members on equipment maintenance and proper usage.
  • Physical demands include bending, stooping, climbing, twisting, reaching, walking on rough or uneven terrain, kneeling, and pulling or lifting up to 80#s (greater with assistance).
  • Work is often performed in uncontrollable working conditions of inclement weather of heat, cold, dampness, dust, moderate noise levels, and hazardous chemicals;
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver's License.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
  • Operates larger mowers and other parks maintenance Division equipment that includes gang mowers, terrain king, hustler, tractors, slope mower, front end loader, and backhoe;
  • Is responsible for leading major maintenance projects with crew members.
  • Mows, weeds, trims, and picks up debris around streets, parks, city facilities, and right-of-ways; plants, waters, fertilizes, and applies herbicides and pesticides per direction, trims shrubs, and trees, cleans restrooms, installs and repairs fences, guardrails, walkways, etc.
  • Troubleshoots minor electrical mechanical equipment problems; detects hazardous atmosphere and corrects problems before entry into confined space;
  • Performs non-routine maintenance and repairs;
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned;
  • Works alongside crew members, provides constant training and safety procedures.
  • Work is occasionally performed in undesirable physical and working conditions of heat, cold, and dampness and may be exposed to hazards and chemicals;
  • Contacts with other agencies, departments, the public, and employees is extensive, often requiring tact and diplomacy;

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS: Parks Maintenance Worker III supervises a team of crew members each day.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Graduation from high school, or its equivalent, PLUS
  • Three years experience in parks construction, lawncare, repair, and maintenance or comparable work;

Certifications and Licenses
  • Must possess an Ornamental and Turf Right-A-Way and Public Health Herb/Pesticide Sprayer License in 1 year of hiring.
  • NRPA Playground Inspector and complete Master Gardner class in 1 year of hiring.
  • Must possess a valid Oklahoma Class B CDL and maintain a status of insurability in 1 year of hiring.

EXAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE CRITERIA AND EXPECTATIONS:
  • May perform call-back work during off duty hours;
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of parks and facilities management including construction, repair, and maintenance methods to enhance the facilities;
  • Is responsible for equipment and facilities of value that requires care to prevent damage and the use of proper safety equipment following established safety procedures to prevent injury;
  • In the winter, managing off-season, park system maintenance and assisting throughout Public Works Department.
  • May be assigned to other specific work areas of the City;
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned.
