Position Description

The Systems Engineer II provides technical support for computer, network, and security infrastructure used internally and externally, recognizing and resolving endpoint, network, wireless, firewall, and related infrastructure problems as they occur. Provides technical support for internal and (if needed) external customers. Builds, supports, and documents secure and reliable infrastructure environments for the ABAโ€™s information systems, with an emphasis on network availability, connectivity, and security controls. Monitors key systems and responds to issues and alerts.

Supports key infrastructure and security projects as a member of the infrastructure team. Provides project leadership. Provides mentorship to system engineers.

Education

  • Baccalaureate degree or comparable work experience is required.

  • Working knowledge of virtualization, storage, and server technologies sufficient to support infrastructure operations.
  • Working knowledge of information security systems, applications, procedures, and best practices, including access controls, vulnerability remediation, monitoring, and incident response support.
  • Ability to create high-quality network, security, and systems documentation and keep it up to date.

Experience

  • A minimum of 8 yearsโ€™ experience supporting enterprise infrastructure, including network, endpoint, server, and security systems.
  • Good understanding of Cisco switching, including switch configuration, VLANs, trunks, port security, and network troubleshooting.
  • Experience supporting firewall platforms, preferably Palo Alto and Fortinet, including firewall policy changes, VPN connectivity, log review, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience supporting enterprise wireless networks and Aruba access points.
  • Experience with network monitoring, performance analysis, capacity planning, and documentation.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server and Active Directory in an infrastructure support capacity.
  • Good understanding of software development and business system support needs as they relate to secure, reliable infrastructure environments.

Highly desirable:

  • Experience with Palo Alto Panorama, FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, or comparable centralized firewall management tools.
  • Experience with Aruba Central, AirWave, ClearPass, or comparable wireless management and authentication tools.
  • Experience with security monitoring, vulnerability management, endpoint protection, SIEM/log review, or incident response support.
  • MS Azure or AWS infrastructure experience.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain network infrastructure, including Cisco switches, firewall platforms, wireless access points, and related hardware and software.
  • Diagnose and resolve problems affecting desktop PCs, servers, networks, wireless connectivity, VPN access, and security systems. Respond to support calls in a fast, effective, and courteous manner, whether during business hours or when โ€œon call.โ€
  • Configure and support firewall rules, VPN access, network segmentation, wireless access, and related security controls in accordance with ABA policies and operational needs.
  • Monitor network, firewall, wireless, endpoint, and server infrastructure; review alerts, logs, and performance trends; and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Perform the collection, analysis, and reporting of data for use in maintenance, performance tuning, capacity planning, and security review.
  • Support vulnerability remediation, patch coordination, endpoint protection, access control reviews, and incident response activities as needed.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation for network diagrams, firewall rules, wireless configurations, infrastructure standards, support procedures, and system inventories.
  • Assist IT staff with capacity planning, business continuity planning, disaster recovery readiness, and infrastructure lifecycle planning as needed.
  • Track IT inventory and order new network, security, endpoint, hardware, and software assets as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of the latest network, wireless, security, and infrastructure technologies.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to less experienced engineering staff.
  • Travel to support remote ABA operations as needed.
  • Provide end-user support and monitor key systems, including periodic after business hours support.
  • Lead and contribute to infrastructure and security projects as a member of the Infrastructure team.

Special Requirements

  • Saturday workdays 5 -10 days per year.
  • Ability to work on feet consistently for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work on step ladders on occasion.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • Must be able to work onsite in Raleigh, NC at least two days/week.
