What are Airspace Managers?

Airspace Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating the use of controlled airspace to ensure safe and efficient movement of aircraft. They work closely with air traffic control, military, and civil aviation authorities to manage flight paths, implement airspace policies, and resolve conflicts. Their role is crucial in optimizing airspace usage, minimizing delays, and maintaining safety standards within designated regions. Airspace Managers also contribute to planning and responding to emergencies or special events that impact air traffic.

What are some common challenges an Airspace Manager faces when coordinating with multiple stakeholders during high-traffic periods?

Airspace Managers often encounter challenges when balancing the needs of commercial airlines, military operations, and private aviation during periods of high air traffic. Coordinating real-time changes requires strong communication and negotiation skills to ensure safety and minimize delays. Unexpected weather changes and evolving flight plans can add complexity, making proactive planning and adaptability essential. Successfully managing these situations often involves close collaboration with air traffic controllers, regulatory agencies, and airport operations teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Airspace Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Airspace Manager, you need expertise in air traffic management, regulatory compliance, and aeronautical principles, often backed by a relevant degree and experience in aviation operations. Familiarity with air traffic control systems, radar software, and flight planning tools is essential, along with certifications like ICAO or FAA credentials. Strong decision-making, communication, and organizational skills help coordinate complex activities and manage stakeholder relationships. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant use of airspace, which is critical for aviation safety and operational flow.

Job description

Company Introduction:
Airspace is a tech-enabled freight forwarder that's redefining how the world's most critical packages are delivered. Headquartered in Carlsbad, California, Airspace has employees who are based around the world. Our European headquarters is in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
As a recognized leader in AI and machine learning, our team leverages data and patented technology to coordinate logistics across a global network of drivers and airlines. Our goal is to deliver those packages that are truly mission-critical in a way that is faster, more transparent, more secure, and more accountable than ever before. The items we deliver range from organs for transplant, to parts for critical machinery including grounded aircraft and highly sensitive components such as semiconductors.
Airspace has been rated one of America's best Startup Employers, listed as one of CNBC's Disruptor 50 companies, and featured as an Innovation and Disruption leader by CBS News. Airspace has the support of leading investors such as Telstra Ventures, HarbourVest Partners, Defy Partners, DBL Partners, and Scale Ventures. To date the company has raised more than $140m.
The company is growing rapidly and serving more places around the world than ever before. We are looking for passionate, motivated individuals who want to make an IMPACT every day to help us execute on our mission of reshaping the world of time-critical logistics.
Shape the Platform Behind Life-Changing Deliveries
Airspace is redefining time-critical logistics in the healthcare industry. From ensuring life-saving medical devices reach patients on time, to supporting pharmacy and lab networks with precise, reliable deliveries, we help the world's most essential healthcare providers operate at peak performance. When failure isn't an option, they turn to us.
We're looking for a Product Manager to lead our Healthcare Platform, the foundation for how medical device manufacturers, health systems, labs, and pharmacies interact with Airspace. You'll define and deliver platform features that enable reliability, visibility, and scale across some of the most operationally complex and time-critical logistics workflows in the world.
What You'll Do
Own the Fleet Manager Platform Vision
  • Own the roadmap and metrics for the core platform serving all Healthcare verticals including Medical Device, Health Systems & Labs, and Pharmaceuticals. Own platform adoption and retention metrics, with accountability for the product backlog and delivery prioritization.
  • Deliver platform-level improvements that support vertical specific workflows while enabling custom configurations and growth into neighboring verticals.
  • Identify opportunities to improve optimization, customer, and driver experiences.
Solve for Complex Operational Workflows
  • Leverage logistics and supply chain expertise to understand routing logic, scheduling constraints, and operational workflows. Deeply understand the nuances of each vertical including regulatory needs and customer to end-customer relationships. Healthcare domain knowledge is a plus but not required, we'll help you build that expertise.
  • Lead improvements in shipment visibility, proactive exception handling, and platform performance.
Drive Cross-Functional Alignment
  • Collaborate with engineering, design, AI, and data science to deliver intelligent, scalable solutions. Excel at setting up problems and defining requirements rather than solving them, our strong engineering and AI teams need clear problem definition and strategic direction from you.
  • Partner with sales representatives, account managers, and operations leads to ensure platform changes drive measurable customer outcomes.
  • Align platform enhancements with broader business goals.
Build for Scale and Reuse
  • Design systems and components that can be extended across new healthcare segments as new opportunities arise.
  • Lay the foundation for future integrations with hospital systems, labs, and third-party tools.

Requirements:
  • 3-5+ years of product management experience, preferably in logistics, supply chain, or operations-heavy software.
  • Deep customer empathy and curiosity that is paired with skills to uncover real problems.
  • Ownership Mindset: Proven experience in defining product goals and inspiring teams to deliver impactful user experiences.
  • Demonstrated experience leading product initiatives across diverse functional groups.
  • Outstanding communication skills.
  • Technical understanding sufficient to collaborate with engineering, data science, and AI teams, you'll frame problems and requirements, not implement solutions directly.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business Management or related fields required. MBA is a plus.

Role Details:
Reports to: Director of Product (Neil Holt)
Team: No direct reports; you'll collaborate closely across engineering, operations, sales, and customer success
Location: Remote OK; San Diego or San Francisco preferred
Success Metrics:
2026: Drive platform adoption at medical device customer sites.
2027: Drive medical device site retention and adoption across new verticals.
Your First 90 Days:
Build relationships across the company, develop healthcare logistics expertise, refine the existing roadmap, and ship your first platform improvements
Your First 180 Days:
Demonstrate thorough ownership of the roadmap based on customer learnings and business strategy, successfully support acquisition of new customers
Compensation:
  • Salary range: $120K-150K
  • High-quality health, dental, and vision plan options
  • Open PTO
  • 401K with company match

Core Values:
  • We are One Team. We believe we all accomplish more when we are working together.
  • We make an Impact. We are determined to have a positive influence on our environment, our customers, our industry, and our world.
  • We are Passionate. We care deeply about our mission and are not afraid to raise the bar.
  • We are Transparent. We pride ourselves on having open, honest, and sincere communication with our team and customers.
  • We are Innovative. We never settle and are always striving to improve our product, service, and ourselves.
About Airspace:

Our proprietary AI-powered platform is the most advanced of its kind- awarded and protected by multiple patents, it provides speed, reliability, and transparency unrivaled in time-critical logistics.
