How much do aircraft engineer jobs pay per year?
What is an aircraft engineer?
An aircraft engineer designs new airplanes or oversees the production of existing aircraft designs. As an aircraft engineer, your duties revolve around using physical, mathematical, and engineering principles to address flight problems and how to improve aircraft design. You work to increase fuel efficiency, speed, and safety features of a plane, as well as create comfortable interior features. You often work as part of a large team, overseeing the design, budgeting, and production of new aircraft. Some aircraft engineers work at airports, managing the daily maintenance and safety checks of planes.
What are some common challenges faced by aircraft engineers during routine maintenance checks?
What is the difference between Aircraft Engineer vs Aircraft Technician?
| Aspect | Aircraft Engineer | Aircraft Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Engineering degree, certifications like EASA Part-66 | Technical diploma or certification, often EASA Part-66 B1/B2 |
| Work Environment | Design, development, and oversight of aircraft systems, often in offices or labs | Maintenance, repair, and inspection on aircraft, primarily in hangars or on-site |
| Employer & Industry | Aircraft manufacturers, airlines, aerospace companies | Airlines, maintenance organizations, repair stations |
Aircraft Engineers focus on designing, developing, and certifying aircraft systems, while Aircraft Technicians handle maintenance, repairs, and inspections. Both roles require relevant certifications and work closely within the aerospace industry, but their daily tasks and responsibilities differ significantly.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aircraft engineer?

Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.
Raytheon's Effector Analog & Power (EAP) Team is seeking a Principal Telemetry (TM) and Flight Termination Systems (FTS) Engineer to provide technical leadership, develop advanced system architectures, and drive execution for Telemetry (TM) and Flight Termination Systems (FTS).
The EAP Department is responsible for the development, from concept to integration, of Telemetry and Flight Termination products; power systems from all up round to the lowest level power regulation; servo electronics supporting all mechanical motion in our products and low noise mixed signal electronics that provides the analog to digital interface to our front-end sensors. Each of these products generally operate in lower power and voltage ranges less than 10kW and 1000V.
The TM/FTS team develops system designs focused on supporting effector flight tests. We adhere to rigorous standards from the Range Commanders Council, Federal Communications Commission, and the National Security Agency in the design and utilization of our products.
What You Will Do
- Lead system and circuit-level architecture design activities for TM and FTS subsystems.
- Serve as the Responsible Engineering Authority (REA) for complex TM and FTS designs.
- Drive full lifecycle development of PCBA-level designs, from requirements definition through integration and qualification.
- Lead technical reviews, failure investigations, supplier engagements, and cross-functional task teams.
- Oversee or perform analog and mixed-signal circuit design, analysis, simulation, testing, and documentation.
- Independently generate the engineering artifacts required to demonstrate compliance with program, performance, and regulatory requirements.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and shape team-level engineering best practices.
Qualifications You Must Have
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
- Experience with electronics design at the system and subsystem level.
- Experience generating and utilizing electrical design specifications.

- Extensive experience with:
- Mixed-signal PCB design
- RF/antenna interfaces
- RF transmitters and receivers
- ECAD workflows and layout/routing constraints relevant to TM/FTS
- Experience with electronics laboratory diagnosis and testing.
- Experience with:
- Microcontroller, FPGA, and digital interface design
