What is an aircraft engineer?

An aircraft engineer designs new airplanes or oversees the production of existing aircraft designs. As an aircraft engineer, your duties revolve around using physical, mathematical, and engineering principles to address flight problems and how to improve aircraft design. You work to increase fuel efficiency, speed, and safety features of a plane, as well as create comfortable interior features. You often work as part of a large team, overseeing the design, budgeting, and production of new aircraft. Some aircraft engineers work at airports, managing the daily maintenance and safety checks of planes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an aircraft engineer?

To thrive as an Aircraft Engineer, you need a strong background in aeronautical engineering, mathematics, and physics, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and, in many cases, a professional engineering license. Familiarity with CAD software, aircraft maintenance systems, and regulatory compliance tools such as those from the FAA or EASA is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this field. These skills and qualities are essential to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of aircraft design, maintenance, and operations.

What are some common challenges faced by aircraft engineers during routine maintenance checks?

Aircraft Engineers often encounter challenges such as tight maintenance schedules, ensuring compliance with strict safety regulations, and troubleshooting unexpected technical issues. Coordinating with other team members, such as technicians and inspectors, is essential to ensure that all work is completed accurately and on time. Being detail-oriented and adaptable is crucial, as engineers must frequently update documentation and respond quickly to any issues that arise to minimize aircraft downtime.

What is the difference between Aircraft Engineer vs Aircraft Technician?

AspectAircraft EngineerAircraft Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications like EASA Part-66Technical diploma or certification, often EASA Part-66 B1/B2
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and oversight of aircraft systems, often in offices or labsMaintenance, repair, and inspection on aircraft, primarily in hangars or on-site
Employer & IndustryAircraft manufacturers, airlines, aerospace companiesAirlines, maintenance organizations, repair stations

Aircraft Engineers focus on designing, developing, and certifying aircraft systems, while Aircraft Technicians handle maintenance, repairs, and inspections. Both roles require relevant certifications and work closely within the aerospace industry, but their daily tasks and responsibilities differ significantly.

How much does an aircraft engineer make?

Aircraft engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $80,000, with salaries ranging from approximately $60,000 to over $100,000 depending on experience, location, and certifications. Experienced engineers working in maintenance, design, or specialized fields can earn higher wages, especially with additional licenses or advanced skills.

Portfolio Required
In Person Only
3+ Years of experience
US Citizenship REQUIRED
Join us in building aircraft at scale, reindustrializing the Midwest, and turning autonomous aircraft into decentralized infrastructure. Orb is a small mission-driven team where your initiative, creativity, and dedication will be used to reach every village on the planet with power, logistics, and communications.
Description:
You will be responsible for designing, simulating, prototyping, and testing airframe structures and mechanisms for Orb's family of hybrid eVTOL vehicles. Some of these structures include (but are not limited to) wings, fuselage, doors, nacelle tilt mechanisms, landing gear and the powerplant mounting system.
You should be a passionate air-framer/composite structural engineer with experience in nonconventional aircraft manufacturing and rapid development programs. You will make decisions every day that have a tangible impact on our mission. May be required to travel for demonstrations. Orb is a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment - the ideal candidate should be ready to hit the ground running.
Responsibilities:
  • Design and analysis of composite and metallic aircraft structures using classical and finite element methods
  • Support requirements definition, conceptual/preliminary layout, and detailed analysis for vehicle systems. Develop full designs, drawing packages, BOMs, and assembly instructions for assigned vehicle program(s).
  • Support research efforts in conceptual-level mechanical design, analysis, and optimization, using scripting platforms like MatLAB/Simulink and Python.
  • Support requirements definition, conceptual/preliminary layout, and detailed analysis for vehicle systems.
  • Perform trade studies from "first principles" and basic engineering fundamentals to drive a design from ideation to mass-manufacturing.
  • Stay up to date on new technologies, aircraft configurations, materials, and manufacturing processes in support of ongoing and future programs and participate in the conception of novel aircraft mechanical systems and configurations.
  • Rapidly prototype and vet design concepts using handmade models, programming environments, spreadsheets, and CAD software.
  • Support the fabrication team during build, resolving issues to keep manufacturing moving
  • Plan, perform and assist with lab, field, flight, and environmental testing.

Qualifications/Experience:
  • BS in Aerospace or Mechanical engineering or related field

  • Familiarity with aircraft design and certification requirements
  • Familiarity with Siemens NX/TeamCenter/Fibersim

  • Experience in prototype manufacturing in a fast-paced environment. Including creating MBOMs, and engineering drawings (to GD&T standards) for fabrication shop handoff.
  • Proficient in CAD workflows, authoring process, and equipment documentation.
  • Experience with project execution from initial ideation to decommissioning.
  • Excellent problem solving and teamwork skills while working with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to scale responsibilities appropriately as the team/company grows.
  • Knowledge of and experience in structural analysis using classical methods and FEA (NASTRAN, FEMAP, Ansys, etc).
