Job Description:
Airbus Aerosystems Kinston is looking for a Measurement System Engineer to join our team based in Kinston, NC.
The position holder is accountable for leading Metrology and inspection support to the Operational Support team. This is for production and R&T project activity. The successful candidate will join a small dynamic team within Manufacturing Engineering in support of production and influencing the industrial system from production through to defining the technology advancements needed for robotics and automation.

Your Working Environment:
The Airbus Aerosystems Kinston facility sits at the forefront of aerospace manufacturing, specializing in the production of large, advanced composite aerostructures. Our team builds critical components for the state-of-the-art Airbus A350 XWB, including the composite center fuselage and wing spar.

Your Challenges:
Measurement Technology (35%)
  • Analyze the needs, propose and deploy, harmonized & qualified measurement systems, linked with national standards and local environmental and Health & Safety rules.
  • Analyze and evaluate existing Measurement Systems, considering industrial requirements and constraints.
  • Implementation and analysis of Laser Tracking technology and procedures.
  • Specify and validate production tools and equipment required to meet geometric tolerances and process efficiency.
  • Deliver qualified, deployed Measurement Systems to plant requirements, in line with the maintenance and calibration plans.
  • Create and define the metrology processes, defining datum structures from key production component features, using CATIA platforms, interface and frontier drawings.
  • Produce functional Metrology Assisted Assembly (MAA) build philosophies, metrology measurement data packs, and Catia master products and engineering drawings. The individual will be proficient in Catia work benches , modeling / drafting / engineering drawings for metrology data packs and manufacture instructions.

Inspection Analysis (35%)
  • Implementation and interpretation of Non-Destructive Testing and analysis.
  • Ensure existing work specifications contain up to date measurement and guidance.
  • Validate and calibrate existing and new Measuring Equipment.
  • Apply Statistical Methodologies to production components including Measurement System Analysis ( MSA) Measurement Control Charts, Statistical Process Control (SPC) analysis and capability evaluation (CPK)).
  • Ensure that ME team members and other relevant employees are aware of the Inspection and Measurement tools and techniques used in the Kinston operation.

Continuous Improvement (20%)
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement techniques to the Inspection and Measurement systems required in Kinston Plant.
  • Ensure the Inspection and Measurement are considered and developed in Industrial System continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Analyse plant Inspection and Measurement data with a view to identifying improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure ME team members and other relevant employees are aware of, and are involved in continuous improvement tools and techniques.

Additional Responsibilities: (10%)
  • Promote a customer focussed mindset and act as a change leader within the Manufacturing Engineering organisation.
  • Ensure the correct standards are achieved for production and MOD's configuration for all program variants.
  • Respond to and resolve technical queries from various departments and stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned by the management.

Your Boarding Pass:
  • Engineering qualification from an accredited engineering program
  • Requires 5 to 10 years relevant engineering experience within a Manufacturing Engineering environment.
  • Strong background in Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering with a knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Strong understanding of metallic and composite manufacturing or Inspection and Measurement techniques.
  • Working knowledge and application of Inspection and Measurement systems and Business management systems (BMS).
  • Strong teamworking and relationship building skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Proven record of providing excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Experience in Inspection and Measurement technology in a production environment.
  • Experience of lean manufacturing / continuous improvement environment.
  • The individual will be proficient in Non-Destructive Testing and/or Laser Tracking technology and engineering drawings for metrology data packs and manufacturing instructions .
  • Excellent command of English (spoken & written).
  • 5% Domestic and International travel.
  • Self-driven with a 'can-do' attitude.

Preferred
  • Degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of design methods both on 2D and 3D design platforms with excellent drawing/design interpretation skills.
  • Knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing and Laser Tracking technologies
  • Basic Spanish and / or French (spoken).
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook) or the Google equivalent.
  • General knowledge of FAA, EASA and ICAO preferred.

Citizenship:
  • Authorised to work in the US.

Physical Requirements:
  • Onsite aligned with the Airbus Kinston working policy.
  • Vision: Daily able to see and read computer screens and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings.
  • Hearing: Able to hear daily to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds on the production floor including safety warnings or alarms.
  • Speaking: Daily able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications.
  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): Daily able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment and some tools including production tools such as hydraulic lifts.
  • Carrying: Occasionally able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.
  • Lifting: Occasionally able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.
  • Pushing / Pulling: Occasionally able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools.
  • Sitting: Daily able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on the computer.
  • Squatting / Kneeling: Occasionally able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.
  • Standing: Daily able to stand for discussions in offices or on the production floor.
  • Travel: 5% able to travel independently and at short notice.
  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): Daily able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces.
  • Personal Protective Equipment required: Required PPE includes, but is not limited to, Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses, Hearing Protection, Respirators/Masks, and/or Protective Gloves as required by site and/or customer site.
  • Administrative position only PPE required: Steel-toed shoes are required for all shop floor visits, appropriate hearing/eye protection may also be required when visiting the production floor.
