Why can't you be an air traffic controller after 31?

Air Traffic Control Apprenticeship programs typically have age limits, often requiring candidates to start training before age 31 due to the physical and cognitive demands of the job, as well as mandatory retirement age policies. These age restrictions ensure controllers have sufficient time to complete training and gain experience before reaching retirement age. Once past the age limit, individuals generally cannot enter the apprenticeship or qualify for the role through standard federal hiring processes.

Is it hard to get hired as an air traffic controller?

Getting hired as an air traffic control apprentice can be competitive due to strict qualification requirements, including a high school diploma or equivalent, passing aptitude tests, and meeting medical and background checks. Candidates often undergo rigorous training and must demonstrate strong decision-making and communication skills. The hiring process can be lengthy and demanding, reflecting the importance of safety in the role.

Why is there a shortage of FAA traffic controllers?

The shortage of FAA traffic controllers is primarily due to an aging workforce nearing retirement, high stress levels associated with the job, and rigorous training requirements that can take several years. These factors have led to a gap between the number of retiring controllers and new recruits entering the field, impacting staffing levels in air traffic control centers.
