JOB TITLE: Equipment Operator II
DEPARTMENT: Public Works & Transportation
DIVISION: Streets
JOB STATUS: Full Time
SALARY: $35,933.00 yearly

Job Summary/ Scope
Operates equipment used in the maintenance and repair of city streets including street sweeper, dump truck, high loader, pothole patching truck, tractor mower, flusher truck, compressor, jackhammer, crack seal kettle and snow removal equipment. Repairs concrete, asphalt, and brick streets, cleans storm sewers and ditches after rains, cuts brush out of creeks, installs road culverts, builds and repairs headwalls, and responds to snow and ice storms and other severe weather events. Some basic data entry for asset management purposes. Limited supervisory and no budgetary responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibility
Integral to the position of Equipment Operator II is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching, training, guiding, evaluating, correcting and, if necessary, disciplining.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates equipment including but not limited to street sweeper, dump truck, high loader, pothole patching truck, tractor mower, flusher truck, compressor, jackhammer, crack seal kettle and snow removal equipment.
  • Operates machinery, saws, routers, air compressor and other assorted tools.
  • Transports and shovels asphalt.
  • Transports equipment, workers and hauls materials.
  • Operates jack hammer.
  • Responds to emergencies as needed, including plowing and salting during winter storms, sandbagging during floods, brush removal following wind and ice storms, sometimes with little or no notice.

Required (Essential) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Valid Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement required.
  • Required to be on-call and/or carry a pager and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of equipment and machinery used in the construction and maintenance of roadways.
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimum supervision.
  • Knowledge of general street maintenance and repair procedures.

Materials and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a variety of equipment, including dump truck, snowplow, jack hammer, backhoe, high loader, track crawler, flusher truck, street sweeper, tractor mower, chain saw and other tools directly related to the maintenance of the streets. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Work is performed under a variety of conditions ranging from extreme cold, heat, wind and wet. Majority of work will be performed in live traffic. Must be able to stand for long periods and operate equipment with dexterity. Must have the ability to routinely lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds, occasionally lift objects weighing as much as 90 pounds or assist in lifting objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds. Work involves climbing, bending, squatting and reaching. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required or must be able to obtain within 6 months. One to three years of experience in related field preferred. Six months to one-year prior experience in related field required.
All applicants must pass a drug screening and criminal background check prior to employment.
Any job offer made by the City is contingent upon the applicant passing the drug screening and background check.
