Job description

Position Summary
The Core Development Engineer – Air Compressor Specialist leads the design, development, and refinement of high-performance automotive air compressor assemblies, pneumatic delivery units, and pressure management technologies. This role focuses on advancing core compressor engineering capabilities—translating complex pneumatic and thermal requirements into robust, scalable designs and driving them from concept through fluid/thermal development, validation, and production readiness.
Working cross-functionally with design, testing, manufacturing, controls, and vehicle-level platform teams, the engineer applies sound mechanical, thermodynamic, and fluid dynamics principles to solve complex technical problems. Key performance focuses include optimizing flow rate efficiency, duty cycle longevity, thermal protection algorithms, and NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) profile mitigation to ensure compressor designs meet strict cost, quality, and timing targets.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical design, architectural layout, and engineering development of air compressor assemblies, mechanical pumps, electric motors, integrated valving, and filtration components.
  • Optimize air compressor components and systems for maximum volumetric efficiency, optimal fluid flow, and excellent thermal dissipation across automotive operating envelopes.
  • Develop, implement, and validate thermal management strategies and control algorithms to protect the compressor during demanding duty cycles.
  • Design and execute advanced acoustic packaging, mounting isolation, and NVH mitigation strategies to meet vehicle-level passenger comfort and quietness targets.
  • Conduct simulation, structural, fluid, and thermal analysis to evaluate compressor performance, component reliability, and airflow before physical tooling.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (software, calibration, mechanical, quality, validation) to integrate compressor assemblies into air suspension control architectures.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and structural/functional troubleshooting of compressor system failures, pneumatic leaks, or NVH issues during bench and vehicle testing.
  • Document specialized engineering processes, design guidelines, and safety standards to reduce single points of failure and streamline future platform iterations.
  • Interface with OEM customers on specialized technical specifications, pneumatic flow requirements, and validation criteria.
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience specifically focused on automotive suspension systems, chassis components, pneumatic pumps, or fluid-delivery hardware.
  • Strong foundational understanding of vehicle dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and pneumatic control principles.
  • Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics, ride and handling principles
  • Experience with validation/testing (bench, rig, and vehicle-level)
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, and electro-mechanical.
Preferred
  • Familiarity with simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, CarSim, etc.)
  • Experience working with OEM customers or Tier 1 suppliers
  • Knowledge of DFMEA, DV/PV testing, and automotive development processes
  • Specialized technical certifications, such as Six Sigma (Green Belt / Black Belt) or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE).
  • Detailed experience working with OEM customers or global Tier-1 suppliers on safety-critical automotive components.

  • OEM Customer Engagement — Communicates technical specifications, pneumatic flow requirements, and validation criteria credibly with OEM and Tier 1 counterparts, balancing customer needs against cost, quality, and timing targets.
Travel
Approximately 15% travel, primarily to customer facilities, technical centers, and BWI manufacturing sites in North America. Occasional international travel to BWI engineering and manufacturing locations is required.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Work is performed primarily in an office setting, with regular time spent in customer offices, technical centers, test facilities, and manufacturing plants.
  • Plant and test-facility visits require compliance with applicable personal protective equipment and safety requirements; exposure to noise, moving equipment, and varying temperatures may occur.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, operate a computer and other standard office equipment, and communicate effectively in person, by phone, and by video conference.
  • Must be able to travel independently by automobile and commercial aircraft, and to occasionally lift and move items up to 25 pounds, such as sample parts and demonstration materials.
