What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI Physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AI Physicist, you need a solid background in physics, mathematics, and computer science, often supported by an advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a related field. Proficiency in programming languages like Python, machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), and familiarity with simulation or data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and effective collaboration abilities help set standout professionals apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing innovative AI-driven solutions to complex physical problems and advancing research in both physics and artificial intelligence.

How do professionals in AI Physics typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex problems?

In AI Physics roles, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential, as projects often require integrating expertise from physics, computer science, and engineering. AI physicists frequently partner with domain experts to translate physical principles into computational models, work with data scientists to analyze experimental or simulated data, and coordinate with software engineers to implement scalable AI solutions. Effective communication and a willingness to learn from other disciplines are important for success. This collaborative environment not only enhances the quality of research but also offers opportunities for professional growth and exposure to diverse methodologies.

What is AI Physics?

AI Physics refers to the interdisciplinary field that combines artificial intelligence (AI) techniques with physics research and applications. Professionals in AI Physics use machine learning, data analysis, and computational methods to solve complex physics problems, model physical systems, and accelerate scientific discovery. This field enables more accurate simulations, faster data processing, and new insights in areas like quantum mechanics, astrophysics, and materials science. It is increasingly important in both academic research and industry settings, driving innovation across multiple scientific domains.

What is the difference between Ai Physics vs Data Scientist?

AspectAi PhysicsData Scientist
Required CredentialsPhysics or related degrees, specialized AI knowledgeStatistics, computer science, or related degrees
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, tech companies, academiaCorporate, tech firms, consulting
Industry UsageAI development in physics applications, researchData analysis, predictive modeling across industries

Ai Physics focuses on applying AI techniques to physics problems, often requiring physics and AI expertise. Data Scientists analyze data across various fields, including finance, healthcare, and tech. While both roles involve AI and data skills, Ai Physics is more specialized in physics research and applications, whereas Data Scientists have a broader industry scope.

Job description

About Rescale
Rescale is pioneering the future of engineering and scientific discovery. As the leader in digital engineering, we're transforming how products are developed-through intelligent automation, applied AI, data management, and the integration of the world's largest network of engineering and R&D applications. Joining Rescale means becoming part of a diverse, collaborative, and mission-driven team that's unlocking faster innovation across industries like aerospace, energy, life sciences, and manufacturing. We're solving complex challenges that traditional HPC can't-and we're seeking passionate, curious minds to help build the next wave of breakthroughs
We are seeking a highly motivated Application Engineer, AI Physics to help build and deliver the next generation of AI Physics capabilities at Rescale!
This is a hands-on, builder-oriented role that sits at the intersection of product development, applied AI, and customer engineering workflows.
You will work directly with the Rescale AI/ML team to build and ship AI Physics capabilities, while also engaging with customers to apply those capabilities to real simulation data and workflows. The role is customer-facing, but product-first: your work with customers is expected to feed directly back into reusable product features and capabilities.
This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy working deep in the codebase, pressure-testing new technology with real users, and turning early prototypes into scalable product capabilities.
In This Role, You Will Be Responsible For:
  • Build and ship AI Physics capabilities alongside the Rescale AI/ML team
  • Turn real customer simulation data into AI-ready pipelines using the core AI Physics product
  • Execute and harden early AI Physics POCs so they are repeatable, reusable, and production-ready
  • Debug and resolve issues across data preprocessing, models, inference, and workflow orchestration
  • Work directly with customer engineers to understand their workflows and technical constraints
  • Close gaps between customer workflows and product capabilities, feeding concrete learnings back into the product roadmap
  • Act as a builder first, with the ability to be forward-deployed on critical customer engagements when needed

Key Qualifications:
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, with heavy emphasis on Python
  • Hands-on experience with ML or data-driven systems in production contexts
  • Familiarity with simulation workflows and engineering data
  • Experience building and modifying data pipelines and ML workflows
  • Ability to debug complex issues across data, models, and workflow orchestration
  • Comfortable working directly with customer engineers on technical problems

Customer Engagement & Travel
  • This role includes direct customer engagement, particularly during POCs and early deployments
  • Expect occasional travel to customer sites for deep technical working sessions, workshops, or critical milestones
  • Travel is purposeful and tied to execution, not routine sales support

Why This Role Matters
AI Physics Application Engineers play a critical role in ensuring that AI Physics capabilities are not only technically sound, but also usable, scalable, and trusted by engineering teams. Your work will directly influence product direction, customer adoption, and the success of AI Physics deployments in production.
