What is an AI PhD in physics?

An AI PhD in Physics is an advanced doctoral program where students research the intersection of artificial intelligence and physics. This typically involves applying machine learning, data science, and computational methods to solve complex problems in various physics domains, such as quantum mechanics, astrophysics, or material science. Graduates are trained to both advance AI techniques and apply them to theoretical or experimental physics. The program usually includes coursework, original research, and the completion of a dissertation. Career paths can include academia, industry research, and technology development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI PhD physicist?

To thrive as an AI PhD Physicist, you need advanced knowledge in physics, mathematics, and machine learning, typically supported by a doctoral degree in physics or a related field. Proficiency with programming languages (such as Python), deep learning frameworks (like TensorFlow or PyTorch), and computational modeling tools is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills distinguish top candidates in this interdisciplinary role. These expertise areas are crucial for driving innovative research, developing new AI applications, and translating complex scientific concepts into practical solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by AI PhD physicists when transitioning from academia to industry roles?

AI PhD physicists often encounter the challenge of adapting their research-oriented mindset to the fast-paced, results-driven environment of industry. Unlike academia, where projects may span several years, industry roles usually require quick turnaround times and collaboration with cross-functional teams such as software engineers and product managers. Additionally, industry positions may prioritize practical applications and scalability over theoretical exploration, so developing communication skills to convey complex ideas to non-experts can be essential. Embracing agile methodologies and being open to learning new tools and technologies can ease this transition.

Job description

This role for one of Weekday's clients.
We are currently helping hire for one of the leading AI labs (via one of our partners); helping them train their AI models.
Have you been curious as to how LLMs generate expert answers and would you like to contribute to their development? There are a bunch of gaps in the understanding of these LLMs in certain key specialised areas (like physics). We require your help in building these models much better (and thereby expansion of human understanding of these fields).
What exactly would do?
You'd be guiding research teams to close knowledge gaps and improve AI model performance in Physics domain.
You will be evaluating advanced math tasks and solutions and provide clear, written feedback
Requirements
Requirements:
Education: PhD in Physics from a top tier university
Work experience: 2+ years of academic experience (research/teaching) or professional experience (scientist, engineer or researcher)
Location: Must be currently based out of the US
Benefits
Benefits
Compensation: $70 to $85 per hour
Time commitment: 20 hours per week commitment (can go to ~40)
Project duration: 4-8 weeks
Flexible, remote work that will have a significant impact on the development of advanced AI models
Async work and communication
Work type: Part-time
Industry: Internet and Artificial Intelligence
You would not be employed full-time and will be paid as an independent contractor.
