What is AI alignment?

AI alignment refers to the process of ensuring that artificial intelligence systems act in ways that are aligned with human values, intentions, and ethical standards. This field focuses on designing AI models that not only achieve their objectives but also do so safely and beneficially for humanity. As AI systems become more advanced, alignment becomes increasingly important to prevent unintended consequences or harmful behaviors. Researchers in AI alignment work on technical solutions, such as value learning and interpretability, as well as broader ethical and policy considerations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in AI alignment roles?

Professionals in AI alignment roles often encounter the challenge of translating complex ethical principles and human values into machine-understandable objectives. Balancing technical constraints with theoretical considerations requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams, including ethicists, engineers, and product managers. Additionally, the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence demands continuous learning to stay current with new alignment techniques and research findings. Navigating these challenges can be intellectually stimulating and offers significant opportunities for interdisciplinary growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an AI alignment specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an AI Alignment Specialist, you need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and machine learning, often evidenced by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and formal verification systems is typically required, along with understanding of AI safety principles. Analytical thinking, ethical reasoning, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These skills ensure that AI systems are developed safely, ethically, and in alignment with human values, which is essential for mitigating risks associated with advanced AI.

Job Summary

Drives the strategy, development, and adoption of the IT Agentic AI Framework - a foundational platform enabling teams across the IT organization to design, build, and deploy intelligent software agents at scale. The ideal candidate bridges the evolving agentic AI landscape and strategic enterprise IT goals, translating complex multi-agent architectures into governed, reusable capabilities that accelerate solution delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the product roadmap for the Agentic AI Framework, prioritizing orchestration capabilities, agent library governance, and developer enablement across agent teams and solution builders
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to engineering teams, solution architects, and business stakeholders on agent design patterns, MCP-based tool integration, orchestration best practices, and context management strategies
  • Define and own the enterprise orchestration strategy, establishing standard patterns for sequential, parallel, hierarchical, and event-driven multi-agent workflows adopted across the organization
  • Govern the selection, configuration, and evolution of the core orchestration engine - evaluating frameworks (LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen, or equivalent SaaS offerings) against enterprise scalability, reliability, and governance requirements
  • Define and govern the enterprise agent library - overseeing intake, versioning, approval workflows, and lifecycle management of reusable agents, tools, and MCP server endpoints
  • Partner with AI architects, security, and compliance teams to embed TRiSM standards into the framework - including explainability, behavioral guardrails, prompt injection defense, and AI risk governance
  • Lead enablement for internal agent teams, solution advisors, and domain developers adopting the framework, ensuring teams build confidently on shared infrastructure
  • Track the agentic AI ecosystem - emerging standards (MCP, A2A, OpenTelemetry for agents), open-source frameworks, and vendor capabilities - and translate findings into actionable roadmap recommendations
  • Define requirements, milestones, and acceptance criteria for framework deliverables in alignment with the AI Center of Excellence

Competencies:

  • Agentic Orchestration Expertise: Deep working knowledge of multi-agent coordination patterns - supervisor/worker, peer-to-peer, fan-out/aggregation, ReAct, and plan-and-execute - and the ability to prescribe the right pattern for enterprise use cases
